EDMONTON - Three RCMP officers were wounded in a shooting in St. Paul,
Alta., on Friday night.
RCMP Chief Supt. Randy McInnis told the Canadian Press that two officers
were airlifted by STARS air ambulance to an Edmonton hospital while the
third remains in St. Paul. The gunman was reportedly killed on scene.
McInnis described the situation as "mayhem" and says they are still in the
process of "trying to get things under control."
St. Paul is 197 km northeast of Edmonton.
This latest incident marks the seventh shooting RCMP officers have faced in
the past decade. In January 2014, RCMP went to a rural residence near
Tofield to question the homeowner and his girlfriend about an acquaintance
believed to be responsible for thefts and break-ins in the area.
By chance, the first officers on scene found the wanted man hiding in a shed
on the yard and a confrontation ensued. Gunfire erupted with one of the
bullets grazing the upper arm of a Vegreville officer. A Tofield officer was
run over by the truck as the gunman attempted to flee. The drama ended
around 3 a.m. when the wanted man was taken into custody.
On Feb. 7, 2012, two mounties were shot in Killam, AB while searching for a
missing gun. After the gunfight with police, Brad Clarke's body was
discovered shot dead inside a home on the property. The two officers -
Const. Sheldon Shah and Const. Sidney Gaudette - both suffered wounds to the
abdomen.
On Feb. 5, 2012, a Hobbema (now Maskwacis) RCMP officer has his leg broken
after ATV driver wanted for gunplay slams into him as he exits a patrol car.
Two RCMP officers suffered gunshot wounds responding to a report of gunmen
at a home in Breton, AB in December 2011. The two Mounties were treated for
non life-threatening injuries and two people were arrested.
On March 3, 2005, RCMP Constables Brock Myrol, Anthony Gordon, Leo Johnston
and Peter Schiemann are gunned down by James Roszko near Mayerthorpe, AB in
the largest RCMP massacre in modern RCMP history.
On Feb. 28 2004, RCMP Cpl. James Galloway was shot dead during an armed
standoff at a home in Spruce Grove. Gunman Martin Ostopovich died in a hail
of bullets.
