FYI: the origin of Chautauqua.

Rise and decline of the Chautauqua movement:
The popularity of the Chautauqua movement can be attributed in part to thesocial and geographic isolation of American farming and ranchingcommunities. People in such areas would naturally be hungry for education, culture, and entertainment, and the Chautauqua movement was a timelyresponse to that need in the late nineteenth century and early twentiethcentury. By the turn of the century, however, other entertainment andeducational opportunities, such as radio and movies, began to arrive inAmerican towns to compete with Chautauqua lectures. With the advent of theautomobile after 1910, and the radio after 1920, middle class Americanscould now listen to or attend cultural events previously available only inurban areas and the Chautauqua movement lost popularity.
