STAND AND FIGHT! Detroit Grandmother/Carry Permit Holder Shoots Her Way Out Of Ambush With Concealed Handgun

"An elder warrior said,' Once out of your front door you are surrounded by death. Once you leave your gate you are surrounded by enemies.'  This saying is not merely a parable , but a way to prepare for your fate."

Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai by Yamamoto Tsunetomo

Keep in mind that the driveway of a person's home is an excellent place to launch an ambush, whether the object is robbery, abduction or murder, particularly when the target is getting in or out of his or her car. The attackers will usually know the approximate times the target leaves for work and returns home. If the object of the ambush is a carjacking, so much the better, since the attackers will know precisely when and where the car will be momentarily stationary and the doors will likely be unlocked. Plus when the car is in the driveway it will be easy for the attackers to block the target car with their own vehicle to prevent its escape.

Therefore it pays to be wary and watch for any suspicious lurkers when you leave home and when you return. Especially if you live in a "bad neighborhood" or on the border of one. As Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee County, WI observed, once the criminal element picks all the "low hanging fruit" in the bad neighborhood, it isn't too long before they launch forays into adjacent neighborhoods and suburbs  looking for new and more lucrative targets.

If you think you are being targeted, besides having a CCW license,  it’s a good idea to carry bag with a Kevlar panel with you to your car that you can use as a shield. It's much cheaper than a Kevlar vest or a Kevlar-lined jacket and, of course, people tend not to wear such vests, unless they expect imminent attack, because they often find them  to be hot and uncomfortable (and nobody dresses up to go out anymore).

Also have someone watch from the house for any lurkers who suddenly make a bee-line for your driveway, such that that person can warn you, summon help and/or come to your aid. For those reasons, it certainly won't hurt for the "'watcher" to have both a shotgun and a telephone within easy reach. Particularly a cordless phone connected to a land-line. Keep in mind that most land-line telephone services today (including AT&T, Comcast, Charter and Cox) today provide "enhanced 9-11" service. This means that the 9-11 center will automatically receive a text message identifying your phone number and street address, so the police will be dispatched to your location even if you become unable to speak or otherwise provide such details (FYI: many cell phone services don't provide such automatic location information to the 9-11 center). Who knows, but that the police might even arrive in time to help you.
