Crimean Tatars deported by Stalin rally against Russia

More background info on the situation in Ukraine.

The Tatars, AKA “Tartars” (people from Hell), are a Turkic people that comprise about 12% of the population of the Crimean Peninsula. Some 60 % of the rest of the population of Crimea are ethnic Russians who want to rejoin with Russia propper. The Tatars were originally vassals of Genghis Kahn’s Mongol Empire and were part of the Mongol “Golden Horde” that conquered Russia and occupied it for many centuries. Later, as the Mongol Empire disintegrated, the Taters converted to Islam became vassals of the Ottoman Turkish Sultan in Istanbul (Constantinople). In 1788 the Russian Czar conquered  the Crimea and the Tatars finally went from being rulers of southern Russia and Ukraine to being a conquered and stateless people themselves.
