Analysts-Black Sea port in Ukraine still key to Russia's naval interests

“Russia’s incursion into the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine has drawn attention to its naval base in Sevastopol and its Black Sea Fleet, a modest force of aging ships that military analysts say Russia is trying to modernize.”
Putin wants to get control of Sevastopol and all the other former Soviet Navy bases on the Crimea peninsula. Seizing the Crimea to protect all the ethnic Russians living there from becoming oppressed by the new Ukraine regime gives him a ready made justification for expanding Russian power projection. Putin will join the ranks of Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great , Catherine the Great, Joseph  Stalin and all the other Russian rulers who expanded the Russian Empire.
