“On
18 March President Putin signed the treaty of reunification with Crimea
along with the Crimean prime minister and parliament speaker. He gave a
ten minute address in which he in which he defended Crimea's vote as a
restoration of historical justice.”
“In
the speech, Putin stressed the history of Russian connections to
Crimea, the legitimacy of Russian actions and the precedent set by
Western recognition of Kosovo.”
Yeah,
remember Kosovo? The Russians sure do. They remember how the US and
NATO intervention in Kosovo redrew the borders of Serbia and effectively
granted the province of Kosovo independence from Serbia. The US and
NATO maintained they did this for good and noble reasons: to end the
genocide and ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Serbs against the
Muslim Albanian Kosovars (and saved western Europe from having to take
in the Kosovar refugees, most of whom would likely become welfare
clients and/or gangsters). However, the fact remains that the US and
NATO redrew the borders of a sovereign country in contravention of the
UN Charter when it suited them to do so. So whenever our President
scolds the Russians for breaking international law by annexing Crimea,
the rebuke falls on deaf ears, for in the minds of the Russians the US
and NATO did it first. And might do it again whenever it suited them,
for that matter, which is why the Russians are happy to have a strong
leader who will stand up to the West.
