This is curious. Even the police chief told the TV news elsewhere that this
shooting looks like a case of self-defense and yet, they holding the
maintenance man in jail pending charges of first degree intentional
homicide. So what's up with this?

One gets the impression the authorities are trying to avoid a "George
Zimmerman " situation by not giving the person who acted in self-defense a
presumption of innocence until proven guilty, thereby placating the friends
and relatives of the late lamented teenagers who clearly seek to make
excuses for their actions, as well as seeking to avoid accusations from the
local racial  grievance advocates that the police are somehow countenancing
an "open season" on poor African-American youth.

After all, ganging up on people and beating them with a baseball bat is just
what people do in the inner city in lieu of taking someone they have a
monetary dispute with to small claims court. So what might appear to be a
criminal assault to the public at large might not be regarded as such in
that neighborhood. Thus the alleged attackers might have been "good" people
who were not really threatening the maintenance worker with grievous bodily
injury or death  and the presumed victim of the beating may not have been
entirely blameless, you see.
