Regardless, the TSA serves three important functions:
1. Security Theater. After 9-11 it was necessary to show people that the
Federal government was doing something material to ensure their safety while
flying on commercial airliners. Even if most of the things the government
was doing didn't really make you safer from a terrorist attack . Let's face
it, number one, the air travel security system pre-9-11 was designed merely
to thwart individual crazy people from hijacking a plane, not well-organized
and determined bands of terrorists. Post 9-11 it still is for the most part.
Number two, lots of people have irrational fears about flying anyway, so
it's often necessary to do things to placate them and allay their fears even
though those things serve no real purpose. In such matters as security and
public relations then, it is often vitally important that people SEE you
doing something.
2. It created new members for the public service unions. When the TSA is
finally unionized, the union dues that TSA employees will have deducted from
their monthly pay will be funneled into campaign donations for Democrat
Party candidates. Also people who work for the government can generally be
counted on to support the further expansion of government with their votes.
Therefore, it is highly unlikely that airport security will ever be
privatized.
3. Flying while white. The TSA shows middle class white people what it is
like to be hassled by the Man. So how do YOU like being treated like a
common criminal...huh?!
