GUN WATCH: Conversation with an Englishman on Silencers

http://gunwatch.blogspot.com/2014/02/conversation-with-englishman-on.html

Interesting. Yes, in England, despite the severe restrictions on gun
ownership, having a silencer mounted on your gun is no more illegal or
controversial than having a muffler on your car there (in fact they call car
mufflers "silencers" in England). In the USA silencers (AKA sound
suppressors)have been strictly regulated as a "gangster" weapon since 1934.
You need a permit from the ATF and must pay a $200 Federal 'transfer tax" in
order to purchase one.

Some US state have recently passed laws to allow hunting with silencers;
however, you still need the federal permit to own and use one. But other
than the bureaucratic hoops you have to jump through to own one legally,
silencers and/or silenced firearms sell for fairly reasonable prices these
day, when compared to many other firearms and firearms accessories on the
market today. In fact more rifles and pistols are being sold with threaded
barrels to accommodate legal silencers for hunting, as states amend their
laws.
