2nd US Power Plant was Attacked by Armed Gunman

“A sniper attack in April 2013 that disabled several transformers at a substation near San Jose, CA was “the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred,” according to officials, and may have been a rehearsal for a broader wave of attacks designed to plunge the entire country into darkness, according to a report published Tuesday evening on the Wall Street Journal’s website by Rebecca Smith.”

Yeah, this is disturbing. Terrorists could really raise some havoc by attacking transformer substations across the country. They are a soft target and knock just a few out and you could shut down the power for a whole city, for days or even weeks at a time. Especially the big substations that step down the voltage from the high voltage transmission lines that bring in the power from the distant power plants to the lower voltage distribution lines that carry the power to home and businesses in the community.
