'Smart' Pistol Hits Shelves in California

"The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker
Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is
sold separately, according to an article by Michael Rosenwald of The
Washington Post."

Like they say, a gun is a piece of emergency equipment, so a gun that only
one person can operate is really about as useful as a fire extinguisher or a
defibrillator only one person can operate. Plus experience has taught us
that anything that runs on a battery will probably fail to work just when we
need it the most. Of additional concern is the possibility that the signal
between the control device and the gun itself could be jammed or interfered
with by other wireless devices and/or environmental factors. Furthermore,
will the gun work if you have to fire it with the opposite hand you have the
wristwatch on? What if the wristwatch is torn off your wrist in a struggle?
These are important questions, because gunfights tend to be dynamic and
unpredictable affairs. Consequently people who buy guns for self-defense
want to be assured beyond the shadow of a doubt that they will fire when
they need them to.

The fact that the wristwatch control device is sold separately is rather
telling as well. So will this sell or will it just become another niche
technology like the Magna-trigger system invented in 1975 for Smith and
Wesson, Colt and Ruger double-action police revolvers? Probably the latter.

We know by now that the gun control advocates never bargain in good faith,
so this recent push for "smart gun" technology in California and elsewhere
in the country is merely another ploy to take as many "non-smart" guns as
possible out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.

"Never trust a woman, a district attorney or an automatic pistol."
