Well the Democrats got what they wanted. They were not against going into
Iraq, in fact they voted for it. However, they absolutely did not want Bush
to win in Iraq. They wanted Bush to lose, so they could hang that loss
around his neck, and by extension the Republican Party, for all time. The
Democrats don't view a  loss in Iraq as a loss for America, merely one for
their main political rival and thus a means for them to gain and hold
political power domestically. Just as it was with Vietnam.

"A divided nation finally agrees on something overwhelmingly: the war in
Iraq was simply not worth fighting. "

"Seventy-one percent of Americans now say that the war in Iraq "wasn't worth
it," a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Annenberg poll shows, with
skepticism about the lengthy war effort up substantially even in the last 18
months."

"Just 22 percent now believe the 2003 war effort was worthwhile."
