Syria-The Dark Future of the Islamic State

The good news is that the Islamic fanatics are tearing themselves up in internecine warfare. It appears that the Middle East is going through something akin to the Thirty Years War or the “Deluge” , in terms of a power struggle between competing nations, as well as intrastate and  non-state insurgents. In this case Syria and Iraq are serving as the battlefield for the numerous different groups, much as Germany and Poland did in Seventeenth Century Europe. Although historically the massive destruction wrought during Thirty Years War caused the European powers to moderate their approach to warfare, whereas that doesn’t seem to happen in the Muslim World. Plus, as Strategy Page has pointed out elsewhere, Islamic fanaticism keeps coming back, over and over again.
