FYI ,some background info: MI5, the “Security Service” is the counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism service of the British Government. They operate inside the UK seeking to detect and apprehend spies and terrorists operating inside the country. Interestingly enough MI5 has no arrest powers so it must work in close cooperation with Special Branch of Scotland Yard (part of the UK’s national police force and the British equivalent of the FBI) to arrest suspected spies and terrorists. MI5 is the opposite agency of MI6 the “Secret Intelligence Service” (SIS). You know, “James Bond’s “ outfit. MI6 operates outside the UK to gather intelligence on foreign enemies of the country. According to the Ian Fleming novels, James Bond works for the “Double Oh” section of the SIS, the “wet-works” direct-action section. MI6 denies that it has such a section, although the British Government did have just such a section back during World War II called the “Special Operations Executive” (SOE), which incidentally is where the character of James Bond got his start in the original Ian Fleming novels, before he started fighting “Smersh” (A Russian acronym for “death to spies”, the KGB’s wet-works outfit, an organization that existed in reality) and “SPECTRE” ( Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion- a fictitious criminal organization engaged in international terrorism for monetary gain). Incidentally, during World War II the SOE operated a training camp east of Toronto Canada on the shore of Lake Ontario, where British SOE and American OSS agents trained, including one Ian Fleming.
