The scene was far too familiar for Martin Krause, owner of Schneider’s Auto Sales & Parts.
Kenosha police responded to the salvage yard at 8521 Sheridan Road at 12:58 a.m. Sunday, after Krause fought off an armed intruder and held him at gunpoint until officers arrived.
Corrie Graham, 27, of Kenosha, was charged Monday with felony burglary and theft. He was also charged with two additional counts of theft, criminal damage to property, intentionally pointing a firearm at a person, carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct.
Krause took over the family business when his father, Heinz Krause, was murdered after discovering an intruder at the business on Sept. 19, 2004.
Wayne J. Hart Jr. was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide after breaking into the scrap yard and beating Heinz Krause to death with a shotgun.
Martin Krause, 54, refused to comment in detail on Sunday’s incident when contacted by phone on Monday. He stated briefly it was a scary situation that is now in the hands of authorities.
-Started with phone calls
Police said Krause received a series of phone calls from a former employee informing him that another ex-employee was about to break into the business.
Krause and his wife drove to business and initially didn’t find anything suspicious. Krause’s wife then spotted a light shining on the property and alerted him, according to the police report.
Krause discovered a hole in the fence and fresh footprints leading to a truck, where he found Graham partially underneath the front bumper, according to the police report.
-Gun struggle follows
Police said a fight then ensued between the two men, both of whom were armed, and a shot was fired during the struggle. Krause pinned Graham’s neck to the ground with his knee, took his handgun and pushed a pistol into the side of his head, according to the police report.
Police said Krause then led Graham into the office, where he forced him onto the floor. Officers said they overheard Krause yell, “Don’t you (expletive) move or I’ll blow your head off,” and witnessed Krause pointing a semi-automatic rifle at Graham.
Krause immediately put down the weapon when officers entered the office, according to the police report.
Officers took Graham into custody and found a knife underneath him on the floor. Police said the knife is believed to be stolen from a previous burglary at the business earlier last month.
Graham is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 13.
