Ricocheting bullet kills Ocala police officer in training exercise

Another example of how a stray shot can kill you just as dead as an aimed one.

OCALA -- Flags remain at half-staff in honor of the Ocala police officer killed in an accidental shooting Monday.
Officer Jared Forsyth was hit around 3 p.m. after a semi-annual training session at Lowell Correctional Institution, 11120 NW Gainesville Road.
Police said it happened as another officer was unloading his .40-caliber Glock. The bullet ricocheted off a bench and entered the 33-year-old’s arm and chest, missing Forsyth's bulletproof vest.
He was rushed to Ocala Regional Medical Center in critical condition, but died during surgery.

Memphis TN Homeowner shoots suspect trying to get into his house

He ain’t gonna invade no more, no more…he ain’t gonna invade no more!

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
A home invasion suspect is at Regional Medical Center in critical condition after police say he broke into a home in the 2000 block of Range Line Road, and the homeowner caught him.
"We heard glass bust and then we heard shooting," neighbor Melisha Davis said.Police say a man broke into a house while the family was sleeping just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.The homeowner woke up to find the intruder in his house and shot him in the head."For it to be on a main street like this--where cars drive--out in the open, that was something shocking to me," Davis said. The homeowner and his family talked with police on the scene. No one else was injured.Neighbors say they are sick of break-ins and violence."They don't care about anybody but themselves," Davis said. "They want to get the little money that they're going to have in their hand."Police have not filed any charges against the family members defending their home. This is the second incident this week where a victim used a gun on a suspect and injured or killed them.

I think he was probably right on in his analysis, satirical though it was meant to be. Why else would there be such a high recidivism rate with pedophiles?

His “mildly racist” shtick was funny too. Hey we’re just mildly racist so quit trying to cure us.

Russia Tests Largest Amphibious Hovercraft in Live-Fire Drill in Baltic Sea

Russia has sent the largest amphibious hovercraft ship in the world for live artillery fire exercises in the Baltic Sea, according to the country's Ministry of Defence.
The MDKVP "Eugene Kocheshkov" Zubr-class craft, which Russia says is the largest air-cushioned landing craft in the world, completed a series of military drills in the Baltic Sea, including live fire at aerial targets with АК-630 automatic artillery and the marine equivalent of the Grad missiles in use in eastern Ukraine.
"Luminous SAB-250 bombs arranged in the form of garlands with glowing elements were suspended as targets by Sukhoi Su-24 bomber jets from the naval aviation of the Baltic Fleet," the press service of Russia's Western Military District reported yesterday afternoon.
The Zubr is designed as a heavy duty, multi-purpose vessel capable of carrying large cargo and personnel across water and designed to enable assaults on shore under enemy fire.
According to Russia's Ministry of Defence the ship's air cushion can survive harsh land conditions and can move through swamps, making the vessel capable of landing on 70% of the total length of the coastline of the seas and oceans of the world.
The Zubr-class vessel can carry up to 130 tonnes of cargo which amounts to as many as three medium battle tanks such as the T-80B tank or eight BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles according to Naval Technology's specs sheet of the vessel. Alternatively the Zubr can also carry 10 BTR-70 APCs at once or 360 fully equipped amphibious landing troops.
Other elements of the vessel which were tested in the exercise beside its firing capabilities were damage control, radiation exposure, chemical and biological protection of the ship into the sea.
Russia shares the Baltic Sea with NATO allies Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland, as well as with EU members Sweden and Finland. Its major access point to the waters is the enclave city of Kaliningrad which is separated from mainland Russia by the territory of Poland and Lithuania.
A recent Newsweek investigation found that the increased military build-up in Kaliningrad has turned the city into "a veritable arms depot".
Meanwhile earlier this year defence officials from Baltic states expressed concern at the amount of Russian military activity near their respective territories, while Martin Hurt, director of Estonia's International Centre for Defence and Security warned a possible Russian tactic could include raising the alert level in the region permanently and trigger an assault "one or several of the Baltic states' capitals".

56 shots of alcohol served by French barkeep, charges filed in man's death

A man who was served an incredulous 56 shots of alcohol – leading to alcohol poisoning and death – was allegedly never cut off by the bartender, who now faces murder charges in the patron’s death. The Frenchman in his 50s was at a bar in Paris and was taking part in a drinking competition.
Writes AFP News via Yahoo: “French police opened an investigation on Wednesday following the death of a man in his 50s after he downed 56 shots during a drinking competition. The man, who was not named, was attempting to beat the previous record of 55 shots in a bar in Clermont-Ferrand in central France on Friday.”
According to police, the man sucked down 30 shots of liquor in under 60 seconds. “He swallowed around 30 glasses in the space of a minute,” the police source said. The man was taken home, but his daughter, 21, said she had to call paramedics after he began convulsing. He died the next day after falling into a coma and suffering a heart attack.

How One Hero Texas Cop With a .45-cal Glock Took Out Two Suspected Terrorists With Rifles, Body Armor

Don’t mess with Texas!
Without warning, a Garland, Texas, police officer found himself taking heavy fire from two suspected terrorists with semi-automatic rifles and “protective gear” outside a free speech event on Sunday. The brave cop is being hailed a hero after he neutralized both suspects using only his .45-caliber duty pistol, undoubtedly saving lives.
Other than the two suspects, identified as Nadir Soofi and Elton Simpson, no one was killed. A Garland ISD security officer was shot in the ankle, but was treated and released from the hospital late Sunday night.
Simpson reportedly linked himself to the Islamic State in tweets. Police said they are still investigating both suspects’ links to terrorism.

Take a Look at the Giant Blade a Father Used to Scare Off Burglars

A Florida family says burglars who broke into their home Monday morning probably thought no one was home, and that was their mistake.
Raul Gonzalez’s wife had left for work, taking two children with her. Perhaps assuming everyone was gone for the day, Gonzalez told WKMG-TV he heard movement at his Pierson, Florida, home’s back sliding door while he was watching TV. Then he heard something in his son’s bedroom.
Grabbing his machete, Gonzalez went to investigate. When he saw a leg coming through his 2-year-old son’s window, which had been kicked in, he told the news station he unleashed some “bad words.”
Then, he proceeded to chase them with the giant blade.

New GPS technology that identifies locations within centimetres could open way for advances in virtual reality, scientists say

New GPS technology that can identify locations accurate to within centimetres could open the way for huge advances in virtual reality and mobile mapping, scientists believe.
Researchers at the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas said the centimetre-accurate GPS-based positioning system could allow unmanned aerial vehicles to deliver packages to a specific spot on a consumer’s back porch.
The new system, which is far more precise than the orientation capability currently available on smartphones, could also enable collision avoidance technologies on cars and allow virtual reality (VR) headsets to be used outdoors.
Researchers said the advanced GPS coupled with a smartphone camera could be used to quickly build a globally referenced 3-D map of one's surroundings that would greatly expand the radius of a VR game. Currently, VR does not use GPS, which limits its use to indoors and usually a two-to three-foot radius.
Todd Humphreys, assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and lead researcher, said: “Imagine games where, rather than sit in front of a monitor and play, you are in your backyard actually running around with other players. To be able to do this type of outdoor, multiplayer virtual reality game, you need highly accurate position and orientation that is tied to a global reference frame.”
Humphreys and his team in the Radionavigation Lab have built a low-cost system that reduces location errors from the size of a large car to the size of a penny coin - a more than 100 times increase in accuracy.

Centimetre-accurate positioning systems are already used in geology, surveying and mapping, but the survey-grade antennas these systems employ are too large and costly for use in mobile devices. The breakthrough by Humphreys and his team is a powerful and sensitive software-defined GPS receiver that can extract centimetre accuracies from the inexpensive antennas found in mobile devices. Such precise measurements were not previously possible.
The researchers anticipate that their software's ability to leverage low-cost antennas will reduce the overall cost of centimetre accuracy, making it economically feasible for mobile devices.

Racist remark ended general's career

If he would have said “drunker than 10,000 Irishman” he would have been alright.
A racially charged comment forced Maj. Gen. Michael Keltz to resign last week, according to Air Education and Training Command.
While serving as the convening authority at a company-grade officer's Article 15 hearing April 9, Keltz said the accused and another officer looked "drunker than 10,000 Indians" while referring to a photograph of the two officers. Blogger and former airman Tony Carr first reported Keltz's comment on his John Q. Public blog, and AETC spokeswoman Maj. Toni Whaley confirmed the statement was made in regard to a photograph of the two officers.
As the convening authority in the Article 15 hearing, which was to determine whether the accused officer's nonjudicial punishment for an unspecified offense was too harsh, Keltz essentially served as both judge and jury.
Because of Keltz's remark, the accused officer's Article 15 was terminated, his punishment was voided, and no decision was made at the hearing, Whaley said. That officer's case has now been sent back to his commander, who will look at the facts and decide what disciplinary action -- if any -- is appropriate, Whaley said. If the commander does decide to impose another punishment, and if the accused officer again feels it is too harsh, the officer could request another hearing.
Whaley said that if Keltz's ruling in the case stood, it is possible that his remarks could later be used as grounds for overturning his decision. She did not know if the officer's defense attorney objected to Keltz's comments.

NYPD retraining focuses on talking arrestees into handcuffs

These are not the droids you are looking for… so why don’t you come along with us…

The Jedi mind control meets Andy of Mayberry school of police work.
"We want to talk people into their cuffs," said Lt. Suzanne St. Jacques, NYPD commanding officer for physical training and tactics. "We want to talk them down into compliance, de-escalate the situation. ... The emphasis right now is the talk down before the takedown."
Even when enforcing the law gets messy, officers "have to have a thick skin," said First Deputy Police Commissioner Benjamin B. Tucker, who oversees the police academy.
"People will goad you. People will say things to you. Face it - not everybody loves a cop," Tucker said. "But even when they don't like you, you have a responsibility to respect them and leave them with their dignity even as you do your job."
Over the three days at the department's new $750 million police academy, officers start in the classroom with instruction on verbal techniques for calming down a combative suspect. The course emphasizes the human side of the job, reminding officers that policing is about helping people.
"A lot of times officers can forget why they came on the job, what brought them to this profession to begin with," said another academy commander, Lt. Bobby Lorne Sheppard. "It's a very noble profession."
An entire day is spent in a gymnasium where instructors teach the latest tactics for taking down uncooperative suspects without putting pressure on the neck or chest.
Soon the academy will also introduce role-playing exercises, like the one with the drunken driver, using elaborate sets made to look like a grocery store, a subway station or a street scene.

Baltimore Residents Urged To Stay Indoors Until Social Progress Naturally Takes Its Course Over Next Century-The Onion

BALTIMORE—Calling it an emergency measure designed to ensure public safety and order, Baltimore officials held a press conference Wednesday urging all residents to stay indoors until the natural evolution of social progress takes shape over the next century. “Given the ongoing situation in our city, we ask that everyone remain within their homes for the next 10 or 12 decades while the various barriers to equality and opportunity for all people are slowly chipped away,” said Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, adding that, in addition to shutting down public schools and the transportation system, the city had canceled work for all nonessential government employees while they wait for the arrival of fully protected civil rights and liberties expected sometime in the 22nd century. “As we continue to incrementally evolve into a completely free and fair society over the next 100 years, please do not venture outside unless it is absolutely necessary. Those who go out onto our streets before our social, economic, and political structures have undergone gradual reform over the course of several generations are doing so at their own risk.” Rawlings-Blake then encouraged residents to visit the city’s website for further information regarding what to do as they await the year 2115.

Archaeologists Discover First Hominid To Own Tools But Never Use Them -The Onion

KANJERA, KENYA—In a groundbreaking find that provides new insight into early human behavior, a group of archaeologists from the Smithsonian Institute announced the discovery Friday of the first known hominid to own tools but never use them. “Based on the evidence we uncovered, it appears this ancient human ancestor was the earliest species to keep a variety of specialized stone implements nearby without ever picking one of them up and putting it to use,” said Dr. Phillip Davidson, adding that the team unearthed a neatly arranged set of choppers, awls, and scrapers with no wear on their surfaces whatsoever, indicating they were never employed on even a single project. “Our findings suggest that these tools were procured by this early hominid in the Lower Paleolithic period, set down in a designated space in the individual’s dwelling, and then simply stayed in the same spot untouched for the past 2 million years.” Davidson added that the tools were found next to a set of completely unused stone hand weights and a formal animal-hide loincloth that the protohuman appears to have worn only one time.

German defense minister says widely used assault rifle, G-36, has no future with army in current form

H&K is having problems selling the German Government on it’s G-36 assault rifle, a one-time candidate for replacing the M-16 rifle /M-4 carbine. Looks like it’s not working out as well as originally portrayed.

BERLIN –  Germany's defense minister says a widely used assault rifle has "no future" with the German military in its current form, escalating a dispute over its alleged shortcomings.
Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said last month that a study showed the G36 rifle has a "precision problem, particularly at high temperatures." Manufacturer Heckler & Koch has questioned those conclusions, complained about a lack of consultation and accused the government of damaging its reputation.
After parliament's defense committee met Wednesday, von der Leyen said another expert report finds "the G36 as it is constructed now has no future in the Bundeswehr," though she didn't rule out the possibility of using a modified version.
The G36 is a standard weapon for the German military, which currently uses more than 166,000 of them.
