More homeless camps are appearing beyond downtown L.A.'s skid row

Over the last two years, street encampments have jumped their historic boundaries in downtown Los Angeles, lining freeways and filling underpasses from Echo Park to South Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, a city-county agency, received 767 calls about street encampments in 2014, up 60% from the 479 in 2013.
Some residents believe the city is exporting its downtown homeless problem to their neighborhoods. But social service agencies and volunteers say it isn't that simple. They say that although downtown development and skid row cleanups are squeezing out some homeless people, many camps are filled with locals.
Soaring rents, closed shelters and funding cutbacks are pushing residents from neighborhoods such as Highland Park and Boyle Heights into the streets, where they cling to familiar turf.
"Homeless people, especially the mentally ill, they don't like new," said Senior Lead Officer Gina Chovan of the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division. "They want to stay where they know all the nooks and crannies."
Bound by court decisions, the city has largely quit breaking up homeless groups and confiscating their trash and belongings, leaving the camps to grow and multiply.
Whether homeless people are more numerous or simply more visible could be answered by the biennial tally taking place this week.
As many as 6,000 volunteers will go out Tuesday through Thursday searching for homeless people living in alleys, riverbeds, cars and RVs. For the first time, homeless people will be asked about their gender identity, domestic violence and prison histories, and years of military service — information that could better track where they came from and why.

What Do They Know? Why Are So Many Of The Super Wealthy Preparing Bug Out Locations?

A lot of ultra-rich people are quietly preparing to “bug out” when the time comes.  They are buying survival properties, they are buying farms in far away countries and they are buying deep underground bunkers.  In fact, a prominent insider at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland says that “very powerful people are telling us they’re scared” and he shocked his audience when he revealed that he knows “hedge fund managers all over the world who are buying airstrips and farms in places like New Zealand”.  So what do they know?  Why are so many of the super wealthy suddenly preparing bug out locations?  When the elite of the world start preparing for doomsday, that is a very troubling sign.  And right now the elite appear to be quietly preparing for disaster like never before.
…Other wealthy individuals are turning their current homes into high tech security fortresses.
Those that are involved in providing these kinds of services have seen business absolutely soar in recent years…

The Next War In The Middle East Has Begun And Israel Vows 'To Act Powerfully On All Fronts'

Israel and Hezbollah are at war.  On top of everything else that is going on in the world, now we have a new war in the Middle East, and nobody is quite certain what is going to happen next.  Israel has been preparing for this moment for more than 8 years.  So has Hezbollah.  According to some reports, Hezbollah has amassed an arsenal of 50,000 rockets since the end of the Hezbollah-Israel war in 2006.  If all-out warfare does erupt, we could potentially see tens of thousands of missiles rain down into an area not too much larger than the state of New Jersey.  And of course the Israeli military is also much more sophisticated and much more powerful than it was back in 2006.  If cooler heads do not prevail, we could be on the verge of witnessing a very bloody war.  But right now nobody seems to be in the mood to back down.  Hezbollah is absolutely fuming over an airstrike earlier this month that killed six fighters and a prominent Iranian general.  And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that Israel is “prepared to act powerfully on all fronts” in response to a Hezbollah ambush that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded seven.  Just such an incident is what sparked the war between the two sides back in 2006.  But this time, a conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could spark a full-blown regional war.
…If things continue to escalate, we might not just be talking about another Hezbollah-Israel war.
In the south, tensions between Israel and Hamas remain near all-time highs.  In the event of a full-blown war, Hamas probably could be easily convinced to join the fray.  And if Hamas jumps in, the rest of the Palestinians might not be far behind.
In addition, ISIS now has territory near the border with Israel

Blog: AG nominee Lynch: pro-death penalty, anti-marijuana?

An interesting tidbit buried fourteen paragraphs into this New York Times story:

On matters of policy, Ms. Lynch [pictured] called capital punishment "an effective penalty" and said she disagreed with Mr. Obama's statements that marijuana was no more harmful than alcohol. She called the National Security Agency's collection of American phone records "certainly constitutional, and effective."

One has to wonder how many liberals were paying attention to this nit in Lynch's confirmation hearing, and how many among those will be happy to hear Obama's potential new attorney general extolling the death penalty.  Same goes for certain Coloradans toking up as this piece goes to print.  The NSA comment, if spread around, may well infuriate everyone, party affiliation notwithstanding.

Neither liberals nor conservatives should take too much stock in these remarks, however.  It's fair to surmise that Lynch is just saying what she needs to say to the Republican-controlled Judiciary Committee get confirmed – although, as the Times portrays the Republicans, it looks as though she can say almost anything she wants from here on out.

‘They Should Be Eradicated’: Sociologists Reveal Shocking Results of ‘Christianophobia’ Research — and a Cautionary Warning for Conservative Bible-Believers

Sociologists at the University of North Texas are issuing a cautionary warning to Christians noting that, though there isn’t widespread “Christianophonia” in the U.S., the small group of those who have a strong aversion to conservative believers are among the influential and elite.
George Yancey and David Williamson shared findings corroborating this notion in their recently released book “So Many Christians, So Few Lions: Is There Christianophobia in the United States?” which promises to offer a “provocative look at anti-Christian sentiments in America.”
The sociologists, who define Christianophobia as “unreasonable hatred or fear of Christians,” argue that it’s worth exploring potential intense bias against Christians, as it helps readers understand the “social dynamics” that exist in the U.S., according to an official book description.
As far as how prevalent the problem truly is, Yancey told the Christian Post that it’s really a small group of people that hold strong hostility, though that group is comprised of elite individuals with more societal power than the average person.
Yancey said that he and his co-author were motivated to explore potential Christianophonia after they began collecting qualitative data from interviews with liberal activists and noticed a troubling trend among a certain subset of these respondents.
That in mind, a few months ago, the sociologist shared a sampling of some of the “unreasonable hatred” he said he encountered through interviews with cultural progressive activists for the purpose of his study. Here are just three of the comments that were made about the Christian right:
“I want them all to die in a fire.” (Male, aged 26-35 with Doctorate)
“They should be eradicated without hesitation or remorse. Their only purpose is to damage and inflict their fundamentalist virus onto everyone they come in contact with.” (Female, aged 66-75 with Master degree)
“They make me a believer in eugenics….They pollute good air…I would be in favor of establishing a state for them… If not, then sterilize them so they can’t breed more.” (Male, aged 46-55 with Master degree)
These statements caused Yancey to look deeper at the pool of respondents — individuals who were chosen from unnamed groups that are actively opposed to sentiments held by many conservative Christians.

New Hope Minnesota Councilman acts and defends Colleagues

http://gunwatch.blogspot.com/2015/01/mn-councilman-with-gun-acts-defends.html

Fascinating article.
“In the dramatic video from inside the New Hope, Minnesota city council chambers, one of the council members reacts to the sound of gunfire outside of the doors by drawing his own weapon and preparing to defend his colleagues.”
Note: the Gun Watch blog post discusses the tendency to freeze up, go into denial, wish it away (this can’t be happening),  when a calamity occurs. This  is referred to by psychologists as “normalcy bias”. It is the tendency to believe that if a calamity (criminal assault, terrorist attack, natural disaster, accident, war, etc., etc.) has not happened to you before, it cannot happen to you. It frequently afflicts people who live in safe in secure societies. Bad things happening are not a “normal” part of their life, after all, so such people may not immediately recognize them when they first happen. Normalcy bias can cause people to not want to prepare for an impending disaster or to take precautions against crime. “Why are you carrying a gun?” such people frequently ask of concealed carry permit holders. Why indeed? The city councilman described in this article certainly knew why he had a concealed carry permit and why he chose to carry that day.

Thomas Greer as example; Do not Talk to Reporters after a Shooting

Thomas Greer gained fame in July of this year by making some imprudent statements to reporters.   He had shot one of a pair of burglars that had assaulted him in his home.   He said that the woman that he killed, Andrea Miller, had told him that she was pregnant as a ruse to gain advantage and prevent him from shooting her.   Greer is 80 years old, and had his collar bone broken in the assault.  From the dailymail.co.uk:

‘Thomas Greer is presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily injury,’ according to the report signed by Deputy District Attorney Janet Moore.

‘Greer exercised his legal and legitimate right of self-defense when he shot and killed Andrea Miller.’

The investigation makes it seem likely that Greer was "tough talking" to reporters, rather than clearly stating the facts of what happened.  His previous statement:
'The lady didn't run as fast as the man so I shot her in the back twice. She's dead.. but he got away. She says "don't shoot me, I'm pregnant, I'm gonna have a baby" and I shot her anyway.

Presumably, Greer told prosecutors a different version of events, one that was consistent with the physical evidence, probably on the advice of counsel.

The incident serves as an example of why it is a bad idea to talk to the media after a self-defense shooting.  While you have no legal obligation to tell the media the truth, you will be tried in the court of public opinion.  Greer was widely accused of being a cold blooded murderer because of the ill-considered statements that he made.  He would have been better served by refusing comment.

I have to give the prosecutor, Janet Moore, credit for thoroughly investigating this case and making the right decision.  It would have been politically correct to take the old white guy's braggadocio at face value and prosecuted him to the full extent of the law.

It would not have served justice, it would have been a waste of taxpayers’ money, but it would have been politically correct.

Gus Adams, who has been implicated as Miller's accomplice, is being charged with her murder, under the felony murder rule.   Most states have a version of the rule.   Its essence is that if you are involved in a crime where someone is killed, where the death would not have happened if the crime were not attempted or committed, you can be charged as the person responsible for the death.  From thefreedictionary.com:

Rule of Law that holds that if a killing occurs during the commission or attempted commission of a felony (a major crime), the person or persons responsible for the felony can be charged with murder.
Generally an intent to kill is not necessary for felony-murder. The rule becomes operative when there is a killing during or a death soon after the felony, and there is some causal connection between the felony and the killing.
While Mr. Greer was finally found to have been justified in his actions, it could have cost him far more than it did.  His case serves as a strong example to others not to talk to the media.
(Keep In mind that that kind of public tough talk can also set you up to lose  a ruinous “wrongful death” lawsuit filed against you by  the deceased criminal’s family. The rules of evidence are different in a civil suit than in a criminal trial; there is no need to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. All the plaintiff’s lawyer has to do to win such a suit is prove that the preponderance of the evidence (i.e. at least 51 percent of the evidence) shows that the defendant was to blame for the “wrongful death”. Some states have laws that say a person cannot be sued  later if they are exonerated by the DA’s investigation in a self-defense shooting. California, where Mr. Greer lives, is not one of them.)

Army Delays Effort to Replace M9 9mm Pistol

Bowe Bergdahl to be charged with desertion

Seems the Army sees things differently from the White House.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was released by the Taliban last year in exchange for five prisoners, is being charged with desertion, retired Lt. Col. Tony Schaffer told Bill O’Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor” Monday.
Mr. Shaffer, who now works for the London Center for Policy Research, said two separate military sources have confirmed to him that Sgt. Bergdahl’s attorney has been given a “charge sheet,” listing out the articles of the uniform military code that have been violated
“The army has come to its conclusion and Bowe Bergdahl will be charged with desertion,” Mr. Shaffer said.
Sgt. Bergdahl left his unit in Afghanistan without permission in 2009 and was captured by the Taliban, and held prisoner by the group for five years. Following the much-criticized exchange, the Army conducted an investigation into his actions, which concluded three months ago. Mr. Shaffer also accused the Obama administration of trying to keep the detail of Sgt. Bergdahl’s charges hidden. “This is shaping up to be a titanic struggle behind the scenes,” he said. “Believe me, the Army here wants to do the right thing … And the White House, because of the political narrative, President Obama cozying up to the parents and because he, President Obama, releasing the five Taliban … The narrative is what the White House does not want to have come out.”

Act Compliant to Gain time and Opportunity

Most armed robbers are reluctant to shoot.   There can be many reasons for this, including additional scrutiny from the authorities, drawing attention to the crime in progress, even a reluctance to inflict harm.   Often, this will give the victim an opportunity to feign compliance in order to gain an advantage.

…The owner of the engineering firm that Fabian works for said that robbery is an occupational hazard for surveyors.

"There is actually a law enforcement database of all of the robberies that are going on that are affecting surveyors and there has been hundreds of instruments and equipment stolen," he said.

Surveying was a hazardous profession in George Washington's era as well, though mostly on the frontier.   High crime urban areas have become the "modern frontier" in our time.

Israel Considers Cancelling Conscription

The problem with the draft dodgers is that they know that Israel has never been defeated in war and has been the top military power in the region for decades. Many young men believe they won't be missed if they manage to fake their way into an exemption. In the last few years the military has been cracking down on the exemptions, sending out investigators to make sure those claiming a deferment are entitled to it. This has resulted in thousands of young men, and especially women, changing their declaration (usually about religious matters) and choosing to serve. But it also provided publicity for the extent of the draft-dodging and that made it a hot issue.

Terrorism- The Religion Of Peace Defines Peace Differently

Are there peaceful Muslims? Of course there are, but they matter as much as peaceful Germans did on 1 September, 1939 and peaceful Japanese did on 7 December, 1941. Don’t bother to ask the Ukrainians about how much the peaceful Russians matter either.

Moslems in general say they oppose Islamic terrorism and that Islam is the “religion of peace.” But given the fact that 95 percent of terrorism deaths are attributable to Islamic terrorists and that has been the case for over two decades what is one to make of the situation? Multiple surveys of Moslem populations worldwide show that about 12 percent of the 1.5 billion Moslems on the planet support Islamic terrorism. That’s nearly 200 million people. That explains why after every major Islamic terrorists attack in the West there are open and unmolested (by the police or anyone else) celebrations in most Moslem nations (and some countries where Moslems are a minority). This was noted in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, but most governments of these Moslem nations made loud and unequivocal condemnations of these Islamic terror attacks, at least to non-Moslem countries. But internally Westerners who were present in Moslem countries at the time often saw these celebrations and those who spoke the local language had no illusions about what was being celebrated. There are no such celebrations (most of the time) when the Islamic terrorists are killing Moslems somewhere. In fact most of the victims of Islamic terrorism are Moslems. Thus Moslems can say, with some degree of truth that all Moslems condemn Islamic terrorist violence, without adding that this regret only applies when the victims are fellow Moslems.

Iraq-You Cannot Hustle The West In Iraq Any More

January 22, 2015: Iraqi leaders keep pressing the United States and the other nations supplying air support to do more in the fight against ISIL. The Iraqis are particularly upset at the disproportionate number of air strikes provided to the Kurds defending the Syrian town of Kobane and are not pleased when they are told the reasons why. The Kurds get more air support because they are better and more dependable soldiers (despite the fact that most of them are part-time militia). Most of the Kurds at Kobane have been trained, often by American soldiers over the last two decades and that training stuck. Some of the Kurds at Kobane are recent volunteers with a few days or weeks of training but they have the same attitudes. The Kurds will follow orders and their officers, who were also trained, usually by Americans, are dependable and, unlike their Iraqi Arab counterparts, not corrupt and prone to run away when things get rough. Because of the greater effectiveness and reliability of the Kurds the U.S. trusts them to look after American air control teams sent to work with them, or to provide accurate and reliable information to warplanes overhead when there are no air controllers available. Thus the Kurds provide more good targets for air strikes.
All this is in contrast to most Iraqi troops, and especially Iraqi officers. The Iraqi government now admits that corrupt officers and corruption in general was the cause of the Iraqi Army collapse in June 2014 that led to the loss of Mosul to ISIL. The Iraqi leader even admit that cleaning out all the corrupt and inept officers is still underway and training new, more reliable officers, will take time. But too many of the Iraqi leaders still fail to understand that the sorry state of their officers is a very real and practical reason why Iraqi troops cannot get more air support. Moreover these same leaders will protest loudly is some of their inept officers are the reason why a smart bomb hits Iraqi soldiers or civilians. That sort of protest is expected and there is still a belief that the Americans have some kind of magical power they can unleash if pressured or persuaded enough.

Maryland has highest rate of millionaires. D.C., Virginia aren't far behind

In Maryland, nearly 8 out of every 100 households in 2014 had assets topping $1 million, giving the state more millionaires per capita than any other in the country, according to a new report from Phoenix Marketing International.
The rest of the Beltway isn’t lacking in millionaires either: The District and Virginia ranked in the top 10 among those with the highest number of millionaire households per capita in 2014. In Virginia, which was No. 6 on the list, 6.76 percent of the state’s 3.17 million households are millionaires. And in the District, which rounds out the top 10, 6.25 percent of its more than 292,000 households are millionaires.
In 2013, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia also all landed in the top 10, with Maryland topping the list. (In 2013, 7.7 percent of Maryland’s households were millionaires, compared with 7.67 percent in 2014.)
The rankings aren’t all that surprising. Census data in 2011 found that seven of the nation’s richest counties were located in the Washington region, with Loudoun and Fairfax ranking first and second, respectively. Maryland had the nation’s highest household income, and Virginia was ninth.
The wealth in this highly educated region is indicative of an economy supported by the federal government and its contractors, which allowed the area to weather the recession better than most in the country.

Police: Man robbing grocery store suffers fatal heart attack

EDGEWOOD, Md. (AP) — The Harford County Sheriff's Office says a man suffered a fatal heart attack as he was robbing a grocery in Edgewood.
Deputies were called to Aldi about 8:50 p.m. Monday for a reported armed robbery. Police found a man lying face down on the floor inside the supermarket; witnesses said he had tried to rob the store at gunpoint.
Authorities say deputies found a handgun under the man's body. Law enforcers began CPR and twice used an automated external defibrillator.
Paramedics took the man to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, where he was later pronounced dead.
Deputies identified the man as 52-year-old Wayne Clark of Edgewood.

The Petraeus Affair | The American Spectator

On those rare occasions when a friend takes pity on me and invites me to the Cosmos Club for dinner, I often see General Petraeus seated at a corner table, alone with his wife. Neither talk to each other. It is painful to see. I remember him at an AEI banquet in 2007, where he was the guest of honor, the man who led the American army to victory in the surge in Iraq. He was, it was thought, an eminently suitable candidate for the presidency—for either party.

What happened next, we all know. A shoddy affair. A resignation as CIA director. Now the threat of an indictment for leaking state secrets to his mistress. Even Senator Feinstein thinks the threat of prosecution excessive.
I can think of only one reason why the Justice Department should be thinking of a criminal prosecution.

He must have written a book.

Norwegian soldiers sent on 'naked jog' catch frostbite

Sounds like a Sven and Ole joke.
Norway's mandatory military service is intended to toughen up the Arctic nation's young men and women.
But six of its young military police recruits who were forced to go for a freezing, naked run – and consequently caught frostbite – appear to have been pushed too far.
In an incident swiftly condemned by the Norwegian army, six novices at a barracks in Setermoen – some 160 miles north of the Arctic Circle – were sent for an unscheduled jog in the early hours of Monday morning.
They were forbidden from wearing any clothes or footwear, despite temperatures of -20C (-4F).
Unsurprisingly, all six required medical treatment for frostbite on their return to the base.
…It was not specified on which part of their bodies the six recruits were suffering from frostbite.

Chris Kyle's widow at DC premiere of 'American+Sniper': 'I think they nailed it'

WASHINGTON  The U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington rolled out the red carpet Tuesday night, welcoming stars and politicians for the D.C. premiere of “American Sniper.”
Bradley Cooper, who plays Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, attended with Kyle’s wife, Taya Kyle.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, “American Sniper” is a Hollywood biopic of Kyle, said to be the most lethal sniper in U.S. history, with 160 confirmed kills out of a possible 255. Kyle retired in 2009 and his book, on which the movie is based, was published in 2012. He and a friend were killed at a shooting range in 2013.
“It is extraordinarily accurate,” Taya Kyle said. “They put a lot of energy into making it as authentic as possible, and I think they nailed it. There is one thing about Chris’s brother, Jeff Kyle, that isn’t 100 percent accurate. Jeff is a little bit tougher than is portrayed.”
Chris Kyle served four tours downrange, earning several medals including two Silver Stars.
Cooper became semi-proficient in the use of the three sniper rifles Kyle used during his career, such as the .338 Lapua Magnum, the .300 Winchester Magnum, and the Mark 11 in order to better portray the US SEAL.
“I had great, great teachers,” he said.
Cooper has been part of the USO for several years and has visited Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I wish I could be out there and shake you guys’ hands and say thank you, but I can’t,” Cooper said. “I hope this movie gets to you guys, and that you like it. Thank you.”
In addition to Kyle and Cooper walking the red carpet, Ryan Gallucci, Deputy Director at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, spoke to reporters before seeing the film.
“What I found profound in the film came after Chris Kyle’s combat experience,” Gallucci said. “It had to with when he came home and how he interacted with his wife. It had to do with when he went to VA and what VA told him … But then also continuing to serve when he started to work with veterans bringing them out to the shooting range.”
The movie covers Kyle’s service in the military as well as his return home.
“There were a lot of people after Chris was killed who said, ‘I only spent one day with your husband and I felt like he was my best friend.’ And I think that is sort of a cool thing people can get out of this movie, too,” Taya Kyle said

Obama calls for war authorization, touts military policy in State of the Union Address

Funny, but none of the other news outlets bothered to mention that President Obama wants to go to war with ISIS. It appears he now wants to escalate military operations against ISIS and wants Congressional support to do so. Previously he maintained that he didn’t need Congressional approval to prosecute any necessary military operations in Iraq and Syria.
