Church lady attacked after act of kindness - DailyKenn.com

Lesson Learned: Criminals frequently “interview” their victims. They ask questions and make requests to try to gage how trusting and cooperative the prospective victim is. Or to simply distract them and get them to stand still so they can approach them. For example, “Do you have the time?”. Since everyone has a cell phone these days, even the poor, everyone has the correct time, straight from the atomic clock in Colorado. So it’s prudent to be suspicious of anyone asking you for the time on a city street late at night. Best to not answer and keep moving.

A 52-year-old woman was attacked with a baseball bat after allowing a teen to use the church phone.

Criminals often 'test' their victims by asking questions. They may ask for directions, to use a cell phone, for a cigarette, or for a light.

Martha Emory, 52, said she was with her 3-month-old daughter at the time of the assault.

FOX 5 News spoke with a church clerk Friday after a teen assaulted her with a baseball bat in front of her infant child.

Martha Emory, 52, said she was with her 3-month-old daughter inside the administrative offices at Fairburn United Methodist Church at the time of the attack. According to the Fairburn Police Department, shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday a teen knocked on the door and asked to use the phone. Emory allowed him inside.

Police said the suspect, described as a 15-18 black male, went into an adjacent office and used the phone. Shortly after he came back into the clerk's office and struck her repeatedly with a baseball bat while demanding car keys, according to investigators.

"First thought was 'I'm in trouble' and after the first blow my second thought was 'I cannot lose consciousness, I have to protect my daughter'" Emory told FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell.

The suspect didn't get any keys or other known items and fled the church on foot. Police said the baby was not injured during the attack.

Emory said the suspect was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and is roughly 5'2"-5'4", 130 pounds and has black facial hair.
