The Koochiching County Sheriff says a man who shot and killed an intruder
was defending himself and his mother, who had been attacked.
Sheriff Brian Jespersen says 34-year-old Benjamin Beaudoin, of Mendota
Heights, died from the injuries after allegedly committing two separate home
invasions Saturday morning in Ray, Minnesota.
The sheriff says Beaudoin first broke into a couple's home around 5 a.m.
about 15 miles south of International Falls. Jespersen says the husband and
wife fought off the intruder.
"She locked the door and hollered for her husband for help, and by the time
the husband had got there he broke the door down and came through. An
altercation took place with the shotgun," Jespersen said.
The homeowner retrieved a shotgun and struck Beaudoin over the head several
times, breaking the stock off the shotgun according to the sheriff.
The sheriff says Beaudoin then fled the scene to another home a few miles
away where a 72-year-old woman let Beaudoin into her home. Jespersen says
Beaudoin began assaulting the woman.
"He was choking her and banging her head off the floor. Of course, the son
came out and saw that. He told him to get off of her and he was going to get
his gun. When he turned around in his bedroom the guy jumped at him and he
shot him," Jespersen said.
He says the woman's 48-year-old son looks to have shot in self-defense, but
the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities rushed Beaudoin to Rainy Lake Medical Center where he was later
pronounced dead.
The Koochiching County Attorney's Office was briefed on the shooting, but
would not comment on the incident because the investigation is ongoing.
