Despite what the political class says, it is still clearly a mental illness, because it is a state of mind where people are unhappy with their own bodies and honestly believe that they are of the other gender. Since the beginning of time, people have been unhappy about different parts or attributes of their own bodies. When carried to an extreme, it's a mental illness. But now, in 2015, it's considered a badge of courage.
Can you imagine the chaos when not just soldiers, but officers leading troops suffer from gender dysphoria?
Soldiers deal with life-and-death situations constantly. A distraction or mental quirk can be fatal to an officer and his men.
What do you think will happen to unit cohesion when a platoon is ordered to serve a captain who wears a skirt and has hairy legs and a deep voice? What will happen when a brigade commander is so caught up in his own depressive thoughts that he snaps during an attack? Do we really want a soldier prone to depressive and suicidal thoughts on the trigger of our most powerful weapons, including nuclear weapons?
And are Republicans so cowed that they cannot find a voice to speak out, even about this?

One out of every 3 transgenders, even after undergoing a surgical gender change, will die from suicide. Gender surgery is no help in preventing or reducing transgender suicide deaths. More than 40% of transgenders will attempt suicide and 30% will not survive the attempts and die.
