Don’t ask if the gun is loaded; CHECK to see if it is loaded. The magazine AND the chamber. Always! Some semi-automatic handguns are made with a magazine safety that prevents the gun from firing the cartridge in the chamber whenever the magazine is removed from the gun; however, many semi-automatic handguns are not designed with such a safety (not everyone considers this a desirable feature since it completely disables the gun if you should ever lose the magazine).
