Tiny Nebraska town says no to chicken plant (migrant labor one important objection)

As reader Bob said in his subject line when he sent me this news a few minutes ago: “Great story!”

Nickerson,_Nebraska_downtown_1
Downtown Nickerson, Nebraska! I’m adding this town to my summer fact-finding tour for sure!

We have been reporting for years about how small towns throughout America’s heartland are being changed forever when meatpacking plants bring in transient migrant labor (and large numbers of refugees!) to work the low-skilled, low-paying jobs these meat giants pay. (I’m told that meatpacking once paid well before they discovered, first illegal immigrant labor, and now refugee labor.)
Three cheers for the citizens of Nickerson, Nebraska who sent the chicken processing plant and its plans packing!
NICKERSON, Neb. (AP) — Half-ton pickup trucks crowd the curb outside the One Horse Saloon, a neon Coors Light sign in the window and rib-eye steaks on the menu, but otherwise Nickerson, Nebraska, is nearly silent on a spring evening, with only rumbling freight trains interrupting bird songs.
Regional economic development officials thought it was the perfect spot for a chicken processing plant that would liven up the 400-person town with 1,100 jobs, more than it had ever seen. When plans leaked out, though, there was no celebration, only furious opposition that culminated in residents packing the fire hall to complain the roads couldn’t handle the truck traffic, the stench from the plant would be unbearable and immigrants and out-of-towners would flood the area, overwhelming schools and changing the town’s character.
Nickerson Neb. map
Nickerson is close to the border of Iowa.
“Everyone was against it,” said Jackie Ladd, who has lived there for more than 30 years. “How many jobs would it mean for people here? Not many.”
The village board unanimously voted against the proposed $300 million plant, and two weeks later, the company said they’d take their plant — and money — elsewhere.
[….]
Nickerson fought against Georgia-based Lincoln Premium Poultry***, which wanted to process 1.6 million chickens a week for warehouse chain Costco. It was a similar story in Turlock, California, which turned down a hog-processing plant last fall, and Port Arthur, Texas, where residents last week stopped a meat processing plant. There also were complaints this month about a huge hog processing plant planned in Mason City, Iowa, but the project has moved ahead.
[….]
The question of who would work the tough jobs was at the forefront of the debate, though many were adamant they aren’t anti-immigrant. Opposition leader Randy Ruppert even announced: “This is not about race. This is not about religion.”
But both were raised at the raucous April 4 meeting where the local board rejected the plant. One speaker said he’d toured a chicken processing plant elsewhere and felt nervous because most of the workers were minorities.
No to Somalis!
More overtly, John Wiegert, from nearby Fremont where two meat processors employ many immigrants, questioned whether Nickerson’s plant would attract legal immigrants from Somalia — more than 1,000 of whom have moved to other Nebraska cities for similar jobs, along with people from Mexico, Central America and Southeast Asia.
The story reminds me to ask the BIG MEAT headhunters at the US State Department this:
You are admitting over 700 Somalis a month to the US right now and then we have news from places like Minnesota(which you have overloaded with Somalis) where Somalis working in manufacturing are demanding sharia-compliance in the workplace.  Why would anyone in their right mind continue to hire Somalis and risk a lawsuit? And, why would any little town where citizens obviously are reading alternative media (like RRW!), want that for their town? And, so why do you let the UN continue sending them to America?
*** No time to research more now, but this company is part of Crider Foods with a history of using illegal immigrant labor. I’ll bet a buck that the owners are big donors to certain elected officials (a project for another day!).

The Working-Class Meltdown

The White Working-Class Meltdown in the U.S.

During an era of headline-grabbing advances in medicine, the United States is experiencing a health cataclysm.

The latest straw in the wind is last week’s report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that life expectancy for white women declined slightly from 2013 to 2014.

Other studies indicate rising death rates for a white working class that is in a slow-motion economic and social meltdown. Self-destructive behaviors are outpacing medical advances against killers like heart disease and cancer. Hopelessness may not be a condition studied by epidemiologists, but it is cutting a swath through a segment of white America.

A paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences late last year highlighted the bleak American exceptionalism of this crisis. It focused on middle-aged whites. In the 20 years prior to 1998, their mortality rate fell about 2 percent a year, in keeping with the trend toward lower mortality in other advanced countries. Then the rates diverged. Rates kept declining in countries like France and Britain. They begin increasing for middle-aged whites in the United States.

The slide in the wrong direction was driven by drug and alcohol poisoning, chronic liver diseases and suicide. In 1999, middle-aged blacks had higher rates of poisoning than whites; by 2013, rates were higher for whites. Overall, mortality rates for middle-aged blacks and Hispanics have declined since 1999, as they have increased for whites.

The trend among whites breaks down neatly by levels of education. The mortality rate for middle-aged whites with a high-school degree or less has jumped since 1999; the rate for middle-aged whites with some college but not a degree stayed roughly flat; the rate for middle-aged whites with a college degree or more dropped. If there is such a thing as white privilege, no one has told less-educated whites.

The most direct indicator of rising distress is that the suicide rate in the United States is at a roughly 30-year high, according to new figures from the National Center for Health Statistics. The rate increased for white middle-aged women by 80 percent from 1999-2014. Although the data wasn’t analyzed by education level, researchers believe it tracks with other findings about increased working-class mortality.

It is not just the middle-aged. The New York Times analyzed death certificates earlier this year. The good news is that the gap in death rates between young-adult blacks and whites is closing fast; the bad news is that soaring death rates for whites account for much of the change.

The Times found that the cohort of whites aged 25-34 is the first to have higher death rates than the generation before it since the Vietnam War, and the trend is particularly pronounced among the less-educated. The rate of drug overdoses among young whites quintupled from 1999-2014.

The white working class is dying from the effects of a long-running alienation from the mainstream of American life. As one researcher told the Times, “they are not in stable relationships, they don’t have jobs, they have children they can’t feed and clothe, and they have no support network.” It is a formula for loneliness, stress and despair.

The Washington Post recently wrote a compelling portrait of a woman in rural Oklahoma who died at age 54 of cirrhosis of the liver. It was a tale of joblessness, of martial breakdown, of alcohol abuse, of repeated heartbreak, until she was “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” She drank herself to death. At her funeral, the Post reporter noted the plots of friends and relatives who had died at ages 46, 52 and 37.

The authors of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper say middle-aged whites may be a “lost generation.” That is depressing enough, but there is no guarantee only one generation will be lost.

Oh those colorful Muslim metaphors! Even the fundamentalist Christian Bible-bangers in their best “hellfire and damnation” sermons couldn’t conjure up a more disturbing image of the Devil.

Anyone who thinks fundamentalist Christians are a bunch of tiresome, overbearing busybodies hasn’t seen anything until they have lived under Islamic mullahs.

The premise behind wearing the headscarf is to teach young girls, at a young age, that they are shameful and alluring.

I have always loved Sesame Street. It was the only children’s show, along with Fraggle Rock, that I eagerly watched as a little girl while growing up in Saudi Arabia. I especially love how culturally diverse the show is and how, through multicultural elements, it aims to teach young children the value of mutual acceptance and cross-cultural friendships. In a nutshell, the show is perfect in all aspects of what a children’s show is supposed to entail.
So, it did not come as a surprise to me when I learned last week, through an Instagram photo a friend had tagged me in, that Sesame Street had recently introduced a new Muppet: a rambunctious six-year-old Afghan girl named Zari.
As a Pakhtun/Afghan myself, nothing could have made me happier than to see this adorable little girl puppet wearing traditional Afghan clothes, and representing a beautiful culture that is often trounced by the patriarchy and oppression that exists in that country.
And, for a brief moment, I felt hopeful – hopeful that the world was finally going to get a glimpse of the beauty of Afghan culture, even if it had to be through a children’s show. While I realise Zari’s presence would be limited to the Afghan version of Sesame Street known as ‘Baghch-e-Simsim’, the fact is that Zari is supposed to represent a girl who has gone against the norm and challenged the obstacles that patriarchy has enforced upon women and girls in Afghanistan, i.e. access to education, fitness, sports and, most importantly, the freedom to live freely. She is the epitome of everything that defines what empowerment is and should be about.
Well, that is, until I came across a picture of her wearing the headscarf. Whatever little hope I had was soon replaced with disappointment and frustration. And I couldn’t help thinking about the majority of young girls in Afghanistan who are forced to cover their hair – girls as young as two or three-years-old.
Nushin Arbabzadah, who was raised in Afghanistan and bore witness to the violence and oppression imposed on women and girls during the Soviet-Afghan War, says in her honest and deeply moving piece,
“In my life, headscarves have been symbols of oppression, not solidarity.
Five years ago, I returned to my school in Kabul. Headscarves now covered the hair of even three-year-olds in kindergarten. But it hadn’t stopped the violence. Outside the school, the holy warriors were now doing suicide bombings. By this time, though, I had stepped outside the mujahedin’s moral circle. I had learned that societies can be peaceful and prosperous when even women reveal their hair. This time, I only covered my hair to protect myself from violence. But under my imposed hijab, I knew that our hair had been innocent all along.”
Although I realise that the headscarf may be a ‘choice’ for some women, the fact of the matter is that, for a vast majority of women and girls, it is not; especially in countries like Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. I know this, because I, too, have lived it.
When I was 11-years-old, attending an all-girls school in Saudi Arabia, I was once told by one of my teachers that if I did not cover my hair, she would fail me. At the time, I couldn’t truly comprehend why she was being so harsh with me when I was only a child. To make matters worse, that same teacher later pulled me aside, and told me that if I ever uncovered my hair again, the shaitaan (or Satan) will urinate in my hair. Needless to say, I was truly and utterly terrified. In fact, I was so terrified that for the longest time I even went to bed with my headscarf on. Can you imagine how scary and traumatising it is having to instil this sort of fear in the minds of young girls, just so that they would cover their hair?
I know many would argue that Zari only wears the headscarf in some pictures and segments of the children’s show, and that it is loosely tied  around her neck so that a part of her hair is visible, which is less stricter in comparison to the other modes of head-covering required of women living in that part of the world.

It is loosely tied around her neck so that a part of her hair is visible.

“It is important that Zari look and act like an ‘everyday’ Afghan pre-schooler and reflect the customs of the country. She has a variety of clothing options so that she is always appropriately attired. She wears a hijab (headscarf) as part of her school uniform as well as on special occasions with more traditional outfits. But as a young girl, there are times when it is suitable for her to be without it,” said Jeanne Finestone, program director for Lapis Communications – the Afghan partner of the Sesame Street Workshop.
I do recognise that the creators of the endearing puppet had good intentions and have attempted to create a character that is both culturally authentic and appealing to young girls, thus reflecting the real life situations of today’s pre-schoolers in Afghanistan. But, that is not the point. The point isn’t that the puppet, who is supposed to empower and inspire little girls, wears the headscarf occasionally or that her physical appearance is supposed to be representative of little girls in Afghanistan. The point is that she is supposed to be a child, and children should not have to cover their heads regardless of representation.
It then completely defeats the purpose of what it means to be empowered, for, little girls covering their heads at only six-years of age is not, and should never be seen, as a symbol of girl’s empowerment. As, nothing – absolutely nothing at all – could be more disempowering than a piece of cloth that was born and bred out of patriarchy.
This observation about the headscarf-wearing Zari was also brought up by Fariba Nawa – a prominent Afghan-American Journalist. Nawa makes the assertion that Zari will soon become a role model for young Afghan girls, and even though the puppet appears to have several different outfits on the show, in which on some occasions she doesn’t wear the headscarf at all, it is imperative that these girls understand what the headscarf means, and that it is not mandatory. She further goes on to give an example of her own young daughters who, upon watching the show, would inevitably wonder why a six-year-old girl is covering her hair in some segments. And it will be difficult – very difficult, in fact – having to explain to a child what the headscarf really means, and how so many young girls in Afghanistan have come about wearing them.
As a mother of an almost three-year-old, I, too, echo Nawa’s concerns, and I know there will come a day when my daughter will ask me about the headscarf and why some women wear it. As a parent, I would have to be as honest as I can be, and explain to her that the meaning behind the headscarf isn’t exactly one of empowerment, considering how it has been saturated with sexualisation and objectification of women and girls in the Islamic society. The simple reason is this: women and girls must cover, because they are too ‘alluring,’ and men – the ‘sexual beasts’ that they are – obviously cannot control their lusts nor divert their gazes, as required of them in the Holy Quran.
Here I would also mention that head-covering isn’t even transparently mentioned in the Holy Quran; there are no specific verses that clearly state that a woman must cover her hair. There is only one interpretation of the Holy Quran that requires it, and even that is highly debatable.
The headscarf has become a symbol of oppression in Afghanistan, and it’s time we accepted this reality, rather than make excuses for it or simply brush it aside. For most, the headscarf is anything but a choice. As a matter of fact, it is known that the premise behind wearing the headscarf is to teach young girls, at a very young age, that they are shameful and alluring. It is to remind them that they are sexual beings, resorting them to nothing more than pieces of flesh simply to be possessed and controlled by the men who have imposed the headscarf on them.
Despite what our beliefs are, and whether we as adults choose or do not choose to wear the headscarf, the reality is that young girls wouldn’t choose to cover their hair willingly. I certainly didn’t want to cover when I was a child growing up in Saudi Arabia. But, since it was imposed on me, time and time again, I had no choice but to wear it. As a matter of fact, I was practically even blackmailed and manipulated into wearing it. Choice was never an option.
However, this is not to imply that the idea of Zari is not brilliant, it certainly is. I love Zari and I do genuinely believe that she will serve as an excellent role model for young girls in Afghanistan. My only humble suggestion to the creators of the character is this: let children be children, and lose the headscarf.
Clearly it wasn’t Zari’s ‘choice’ to wear it in the first place anyway.

Donald Trump finds unlikely support from Vladimir Putin

U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump has found himself an unlikely supporter in the form of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump has found himself an unlikely supporter in the form of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

A foreign policy speech made by Mr Trump on 27 April, in which the Republican candidate spoke about his hopes for an improvement in U.S.-Russian relations, was well received in Russia, CNN reported, with people in Moscow praising his attitude.

“I believe an easing of tensions and improved relations with Russia, from a position of strength only, is possible,” Trump said during his speech.

The Russian president said at his annual press conference back in December: “He is saying that he wants to move to a different level of relations with Russia, to a closer, deeper one. How can we not welcome that? Of course, we welcome that.”

He described also described Mr Trump as a ‘flamboyant’ and ‘outstanding’ man, and appeared keen to work with the Republican frontrunner in future.

For his part, Mr Trump has previously returned the compliment, stating: “I will get along - I think - with Putin, and I will get along with others, and we will have a much more stable world. I would talk to him.

Mr Putin and Mr Trump’s latest bout of mutual appreciation comes amid increasingly tense relations between the US and Russia, in a week that saw a Russian jet barrel roll over a U.S. plane above the Baltic Sea in what the US described as an ‘aggressive’ move.

Now Illegals to Be Covered By Obamacare?

In an unprecedented move, California legislators look to extend Obamacare health coverage to the state’s estimated 2.6 million illegal immigrant population.
If passed and signed into law, California would be the first state in the nation to request illegal immigrants be covered through a state exchange, the Los Angeles Times reported…
“This bill would require the Secretary of California Health and Human Services to apply to the United States Department of Health and Human Services for a waiver to allow individuals who are not eligible to obtain health coverage because of their immigration status to obtain coverage from the Exchange,” text from California SB 10, amended April 13 in the California Assembly, says.
Obamacare premium costs will soar 20.3 percent on average in 2016 instead of the 7.5 percent increase claimed by federal officials, according to an analysis by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The discrepancy is because the government excluded price data for three of the four Obamacare health insurance plans when the officials issued their recent forecast claiming enrollees would face only a 7.5 percent average rate increase in 2016.
When data for all four plans are included, premium costs will actually rise on average 20.3 percent next year. The 2015 Obamacare price hike was 20.3 percent.
And now they are saying they will be up again in 2017, and that prediction was being made even before we were told that illegals could be given subsidized care under it:
A wave of state-level requests will ripple across the country ahead of the political conventions this summer.
Insurers say the law’s coverage has been a financial drain for many of them, and they’re setting the stage for hikes that in some cases could reach well into the double digits.
They are saying almost a 40% increase for some plans, and that may just be the rosy prediction, not factoring in illegal alien coverage.
The real kicker is that everyone is forced to buy this crappy product, made to the specifications of a corrupt government that is itself on the fast track to bankruptcy. To anyone operating on logic, a self-evolving free marketplace with optimized products based upon supply and demand would look astonishingly perfect by comparison.
This is what happens when a psychology which is designed to presuppose resources are free begins formulating policy in a world where resources are inherently limited. They will create a system destined for failure.

Germany: Hundreds Arrested at Pro-Borders Political Conference

“How do anarchists imagine their idealized borderless world will operate? If sovereign democratic states are beaten down into diminished power, who will run the one-world society? Certainly the transnational business interests would move into the vacuum and become even stronger. Have anarchists thought this through?”
No, of course the Leftist anarchists have NOT thought this through to the logical conclusion. What we know about Leftists in Western Countries like America and Germany for certain is that they HATE the society they live in and want to see it destroyed. At the same time they imagine that they themselves will not be harmed in the destruction of society, that somehow the chaos they are causing will pass them by because of their good intentions. Leftists always demand to be judged by there putative “good intentions” rather than by the results they achieve.

_______________________________________________________________________

Open borders anarchists seem to be working themselves into a froth all over, from Mexicans bashing Trump in Californiato Germany where 400 black bloc leftists were arrested on Saturday for violently crashing a conference of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party. The similarity — both events featured themes of national sovereignty and border defense.
The Russian broadcaster RT explained the arrests with its usual snark about sovereignty defenders.
CBN’s Dale Hurd interviewed Björn Höcke, one of the AfD leaders after his electoral success in the March, and the politican seemed quite thoughtful about how Germany’s current difficulty.
Dale Hurd: I assume that you think a big problem with the migrants coming into Germany is that they are Muslim?
Björn Höcke: Yes it’s a big problem. We are still a nation with a Christian imprint. Even though we have many atheists in Germany and in Europe, our values are from a Christian foundation. Islam is a religion that never reformed. It stayed in the Middle Ages. And I, living in Europe, don’t want to adjust myself to Islamic values from the Middle Ages. I’m of the solid conviction that we can’t take in millions of Muslims and integrate them into Germany and Europe.
The lefties squawk about the conservative AfD being nazi, but it’s the masked left-wingers who use violence to shut down legitimate speech, like restricting immigration.
How do anarchists imagine their idealized borderless world will operate? If sovereign democratic states are beaten down into diminished power, who will run the one-world society? Certainly the transnational business interests would move into the vacuum and become even stronger. Have anarchists thought this through?
400 arrests outside German far-right AfD party congress, The Local (Germany), April 30, 2016
German riot police on Saturday arrested around 400 protesters trying to block access to the congress of the right-wing populist AfD political party, as clashes broke out between party members and left-wing activists.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is meeting in the western city of Stuttgart, where it is expected to adopt an anti-Islamic manifesto, emboldened by the rise of European anti-migrant groups like Austria’s Freedom Party.
The AfD congress comes a week after the far-right Freedom Party’s Norbert Hofer sent shock waves through Austria’s political establishment by winning the first round of a presidential ballot.
Heavily-armoured riot police used pepper spray to hold off protesters, many dressed in black and masking their faces, as officers escorted AfD members into the congress hall.
Clashes erupted between left-wing activists and AfD delegates, while demonstrators burned tyres and threw firecrackers at journalists and police — who numbered over 1,000.
“No rights for Nazi propaganda,” cried one group of demonstrators.
Now polling around 14 percent, AfD is eyeing entry into the federal parliament in elections next year after a string of state election wins.
The AfD was formed only three years ago and has since gradually shifted its policies to the right, while entering half of Germany’s 16 state legislatures and the European parliament.
Having initially railed against bailouts for debt-hit eurozone economies, it has changed focus to protest against mostly-Muslim migrants and refugees, more than a million of whom sought asylum in Germany last year.
The AfD has loudly protested against Chancellor Angela Merkel’s liberal migration policy but also channelled popular anger against established political parties and the mainstream press.
Around 2,400 members are expected at the weekend congress, which comes after AfD deputy leader and European parliament member Beatrix von Storch last week caused anger by labelling Islam a “political ideology that is incompatible with the German constitution”.
Von Storch said the congress would call for a ban on Islamic symbols in Germany such as minarets on mosques, the call to prayer and full-face veils for women.
It will openly challenge the government position, repeatedly stated by Merkel, that today “Islam is part of Germany”, a country that is home to some four million Muslims.

78% of Gunshots in Washington DC Never Reported to the Cops

https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/vdare-live/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/01122923/surveillance002_16x9.jpg

This is probably true of most major American cities. The new technology of ShotSpotter is merely confirming what we have known all along: the “no snitching” ethos dominates in the inner city ghetto, which is why so few shooting incidents there are reported to the police. So long as it does dominate it will be next to impossible to eradicate violent crime in the inner cities.

If you are in D.C. on New Year’s Eve, don’t go east of Rock Creek without a steel helmet
From the Brookings Institute:
Jennifer L. Doleac | April 27, 2016 9:00am
… In a new working paper, Jillian Carr and I use data from a technology called ShotSpotter to present new evidence on the underreporting of gun violence. ShotSpotter uses audio sensors to detect and triangulate the location of gunfire incidents. Because it doesn’t depend on victims, witnesses, or police to report shots fired, it provides a more complete and accurate picture of gun violence in communities across the country than do other crime data sources.
We combine ShotSpotter data from Washington, D.C., and Oakland, CA, with the next-best data available on gun violence from those cities: reported crime data and 911 calls. Using individual gunfire incidents as initial events, we estimate the likelihood that each incident results in a 911 call or crime report.
Few gunfire incidents in Washington D.C. and Oakland result in a 911 call
It turns out that the reporting of gunfire incidents is extremely low. Based on data from January 2011 through June 2013 in D.C., only 22 percent of gunfire results in a 911 call, which could include calls for an ambulance.
The map of Washington D.C. above shows all the gunshots recorded by ShotSpotter on 12/31/2012. The red and orange dots indicate gunshots that weren’t called into 9/11.
Obviously, New Year’s Eve knuckleheadedness (firing guns into the air as well as heavy drinking) contributes to this particular map.
It would be interesting to know for year-round what fraction of unreported gunshots are due to:
1. ShotSpotter error (firecrackers, car backfires, random errors)
2. Unintentional discharge of weapon (dropping a loaded gun, kids playing with gun, etc.)
3. Celebratory firing into the air
4. Target practice, shooting television Elvis-style, etc.
5. Attempted murder that the intended victim doesn’t want to report for affection for shooter (e.g., wife tries to shoot husband she catches in flagrante)
6. Attempted murder that the intended victim doesn’t want to report for fear of the shooter
7. Attempted murder that the intended victim doesn’t want to report for fear of arrest for whatever it is that inspired the shooter
8. Shootings intended to intimidate (e.g., a drive-by shooting where an enemy’s windows are shot out with little attempt to hit anybody inside).
The last three overlapping categories might be particularly abundant. L.A. Times homicide reporter Jill Leovy’s bookGhettoside reported:
… there were few mysteries among Southeast cases. The homicides were essentially public events—showy demonstrations of power meant to control and intimidate people. They took place on public streets, in daylight, often in front of lots of people. Killers often bragged.

Police Release Images Of Couple Who Beat DePaul Student On Blue Line

https://assets.dnainfo.com/generated/chicago_photo/2016/04/blue-line-robbery-1462046633.jpg/extralarge.jpg

Police are seeking help to find a couple they say beat 19-year-old Jessica Hughes on the Blue Line.
CHICAGO — Police are seeking help to find a couple they say beat 19-year-old DePaul student Jessica Hughes on the Blue Line on Thursday.
Police released images of the couple, a man and a woman, on Saturday. At 10:50 a.m. Thursday, the couple walked up to the victim, tried to take her phone and punched her, according to a Chicago Police alert.
On Friday, Richard Amador, the father of the victim, said his daughter was beaten by the couple as they tried to get her iPhone. Three witnesses just watched and did nothing to help, he said.
Hughes was riding the Blue Line home with a crowd of other DePaul students, but they cleared out after a few stops and Hughes was on the train with a man and woman and three or four other people, Amador said.
Near the Kedzie stop, the man with the woman stood up and told Hughes, "Give me the iPhone," Amador said.
The man jumped on Hughes before she could respond, "pummeling her, beating her down," Amador said. The man and woman beat Hughes' face and he bit her hand. The woman punched Hughes' nose, breaking it.
Photos of the suspects:
The other people on the train just watched the attack, Amador said.
"She was screaming for help, and nobody on the train would help her," Amador said.
The couple ran away after the attack — without Hughes' iPhone — and the witnesses on the train got out of the car, Amador said.
Hughes was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
Hughes is now back at home recuperating, but she was shaken up by the attack, her father said.
"She's emotionally traumatized," Amador said.
The attackers are described as a 25- to 35-year-old black man who was 6 feet tall and weighed 180 pounds, police said. He had black hair and wore a gray hooded sweatshirt. The woman was black, 25- to 35-years old, 5-foot-6 and weighed 120 pounds, police said. She wore a dark-colored "Aeropostale" sweatshirt and black pants.
Anyone with information about the incident or the couple is asked to call police at 312-744-8263.
DePaul declined to comment Friday. The Chicago Transit Authority is cooperating with police, said spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski on Friday.

A Melbourne academic has been looking into why people are serious about electing Trump as the next president and he has found it’s because society speaks his language, we get his dumbed-down policies and got to know him from the comfort of our couches as he fired people off The Apprentice reality show.

Trump is involving more people in politics, because he cuts through the jargon.

In an article for Pursuit, Melbourne University School of Social and Political Sciences academic Dr Raymond Orr, said we lived in a simplified and dramatised society that was fuelled by technology and he blames reality television for giving Trump a serious shot at the presidency.

Dr Orr said people have seen Trump’s reality show, The Apprentice, as a serious application for America’s top job.

Trump can get down on the same level as society, and Dr Orr said his campaign was tailored to people using technologies like social media, where his message could be dumbed-down.

The academic said screen time could blur our sense of reality and Trump’s television show made people feel like they knew him personally.

The academic believes as things on our screens creep into our loungerooms, people begin to treat them as part of their lives and harbour a certain connection to them. Therefore he believes a society that has so much screen time is more susceptible to Trump’s “brash and concept-free message”.

Melbourne University Department of Management and Marketing academic Dr Marcus Phipps wrote on Pursuit that Trump was an unlikely frontrunner and one who broke every rule of a conservative presidential candidate.

“He has been critical of religious leaders, most notably having an argument with the Pope,” Dr Phipps said. “He has even questioned the military record of war hero and former Republican nominee John McCain stating that ‘I like people who weren’t captured’.”

Trump has made many controversial comments, he accused Mexican immigrants of being rapists who were bringing drugs and crime into America and has shocked some with his pro-gun stance.

Dr Phipps said Trump’s campaign should have fallen over ages ago, but instead it kept on strengthening.  He believes it’s because Trump is an “authentic” politician.

“Trump is not scripted," Dr Phipps said.  “It is hard to believe that anyone who openly criticises the Pope and John McCain’s military record has a team of script writers behind him.

“Trump is not stylised. The candidate’s hair alone proves that he is not image obsessed.”

Dr Phipps said Trump was an unfiltered politician and one who appealed to lazy voters.  Watching Trump’s campaign could be similar to watching a reality show.

Dr Orr said the substance of campaigns had become superficial with politicians attacking other politicians sometimes more often than sharing policies.

Dr Orr said Trump’s simple and hurried messages fitted in perfectly with society’s addiction to new media.

“Leaving My Trump Shirt On Was A Mistake.” A VDARE.Com Reader Reports From Costa Mesa

The second episode.

_________________________________________________________________________
As I said, leaving my Trump shirt on was a mistake.  X, having taken his off, then turned to me and said, “Ryan! take off your shirt!”.  I replied, “What? For these skinny Mexican kids?”
But then one spotted me.  ” Hey!  There’s one!”. All of sudden I had three Hispanic guys right at the passenger window.  Then five, it was escalating quickly.  “Roll down your window! Roll down your window!” I didn’t think that wise and shook my head.  My adrenaline was really pumping. As a guy who has been in and seen fights, I could tell that this was going that direction quick.
Now there were about 15.  Right outside my passenger side window seat.  Some of them had bandanas over their faces desperado-style.  This really alarmed me.  Why do people conceal their faces?  To shield themselves from the consequences of their misdeeds.
“Take your shirt off!”. “Take your shirt off!” They demanded.  I waved them off with contempt.  “Ryan!  Take off your goddamn shirt!” barked X.
Then another one of my little Latino interlocutors implored, “Take off your shirt or we’re going to tag the shit out of your car!”
This put X into controlled frenzy.  He just bought the car a week ago and was really pleased with it.  Now he got irate with them and started barking to the crowd: “Hey man!  It’s my f—ing car!  Not his!  I’m a Bernie supporter!”
This seemed to cut ice with them.  You could sense the tension ease.  In looking back, I think his being black made his claim to be not affiliated with me (or Trump) more believable.
I’d like to say I bravely stared them down and refused to take my shirt off.  But I didn’t.  I didn’t exactly take the shirt off, but I had the shirt I had on before the rally handy and I grudgingly pulled on my old shirt over the Trump shirt.
Just then, the obviously-overstretched police were belatedly making their presence known at the intersection.  This shifted the attention of my Hispanic highwaymen immediately.  As quickly as I drew their attention, so just as quickly I lost it as they marched towards the sounds of the guns.
Whew!  X found a hole in traffic and we made a U-turn.  We breathed a sigh of relief and beat it back to the Inland Empire.
