The Pros And Cons Of Body Cameras For Police

The Onion makes a pretty good, and comical, case for putting body camera’s on police officers.

However, in all seriousness the article overlooks the obvious flipside of police body cameras:
  1. Pretty soon every police contact with a citizen will lead to an arrest.  Since there will be a video and audio record of the contact the police officer will be left with less discretion to let people off with just a warning. Why. Because the police officer's supervisor will be able to see exactly how he handled a situation and challenge his judgment. Why did you let that person go? Why didn’t you give him or her a ticket? That individual clearly violated the law and we have unchallengeable video evidence of that fact. Go back and give ‘em a ticket. Keep in mind that the poorer the community the more the local government depends on the revenue acquired by fines to operate (the welfare recipients in the community sure aren’t paying taxes and neither are the businesses that long ago moved out of the area). Will this make people more comfortable when they contact the police or less?
  2. A video and audio record of your “youthful indiscretions” will be stored somewhere on the Internet FOREVER. Every violation of the law and every breach of the peace will be recorded and will be a public record that anyone will be able to look at. So remember, the way you behaved toward the police when you were apprehended for being drunk and disorderly will be available for evaluation whenever you apply for a job, entrance into a college, a loan, a security clearance, etc., etc. Keep in mind that businesses today are afraid of getting sued more than anything else and they the reason they are most often sued is because an employ messed up. So employers will likely become more risk adverse and very wary of hiring anyone who has a public record of misbehavior that could be used against the company in a predatory lawsuit.
Of course the considerations above have been rendered irrelevant henceforth, since We, the People, have now decided that we cannot trust our police not to harm us unless they are closely monitored with electronic surveillance devices.

Officer Michael Slager, White Man

Yep, so much for the society were people are judged solely by the content of their character. Now all white people across America will get blamed for what happened in NC. Just watch.

I give police the benefit of the doubt. They have one of the hardest jobs in America. They may have to make a split-second decision, at any moment, that could determine whether they live or die. Sometimes it’s kill or be killed, and you can’t expect them to get it right every time.
Michael Slager clearly got it wrong. There’s no evidence race had anything to do with it, but in today’s climate, race has everything to do with it. Mr. Slager is charged with murder, and if there’s a trial we’ll learn all there is to know about whether he’s a “racist.”
But that won’t matter. It will make no difference whether he spends his weekends burning crosses or teaching math to black children. A white cop killed an unarmed black, lied about it, and got caught only because someone videoed him. This is the perfect “I told you so” for all white-haters and cop-haters and for everyone who thinks white people are thwarting blacks at every turn.
This, we will hear, is what happens all the time. This is America in all its gruesome reality. This is the true face of racism–personal, institutional, perpetual. And the only reason we have seen America’s true face is because a stranger caught the white man red handed.

'No pizza for gay weddings' triggers one-sided LGBT fundraising battle

Bertrand Russell explained while scoffing at the idea that he would give his money to charity: "I'm afraid you've got it wrong. (We) are socialists. We don't pretend to be Christians."

Yeah, what did this dude expect? Leftists are stingy. They’ll NEVER spend their OWN money on anything.
NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - When Jason Nguyen saw that a crowdfunding campaign for a pizza restaurant in Indiana that refused to provide pizzas for same-sex weddings had raised more than $800,000 in less than a week, he decided to launch his own fundraiser to counter it.
Nguyen, a 32-year-old account manager from Virginia, was taken aback to find that his GoFundMe campaign to support LGBT rights across the United States raised only $700 in its first week - and racked up a slew of negative, hostile comments.

South Carolina police officer charged with murder after shooting man during traffic stop

What was he thinking about?! That cop must have watched too many of those old black and white gangster movies made back in the days when the police were allowed to shoot any fleeing suspects…but the Supreme Court long ago decided that didn’t fly any more, unless the suspect somehow posed a credible lethal threat to someone if he was allowed to escape (like a mass murderer or a terrorist carrying a bomb or something) …so the cop is screwed for sure!

Armed Marshall County homeowner repels would-be home invaders

MARSHALL COUNTY, Okla. -- A Marshall County couple said they are lucky to be alive after four masked intruders broke into their home on Wednesday night, and held them at gunpoint.
Eddie and Cindy Gilmore said they were sitting in their living room watching television, when all of the sudden they heard a loud noise behind them, and barely had time to turn around to see dark figures approaching, demanding they get down.
"Three people ran in and grabbed my wife," Eddie Gilmore said. "She stood up."
Eddie Gilmore says as his screaming wife was taken to a back room by a masked intruder who was holding a gun to her head, another intruder told him to get on the floor in the living room. "And I got over between the couch and the coffee table and when I did I went down and put my arm on the coffee table to kind of hide myself and I pulled the drawer open because I had a gun in there," Gilmore said.
That's when, Gilmore says, he started shooting in every direction he could, hitting two of the subjects. The suspects fired back, but neither Eddie or Cindy were hurt.
"They had a gun to her head," Eddie Gilmore said, "They could've killed her and come right in here and killed me if I hadn't had a gun."
Marshall County Undersheriff Danny Cryer said he thought Eddie Gilmore did what he had to do to protect himself and his wife.
Cryer said the suspects ran from the home onBell Creek Road, and once the intruders were gone, the Gillmores called 911.
"We were were able to detain three different persons this morning who were involved in that home invasion," Cryer said.
Cryer added investigators don't believe the suspects, Broderick Humphrey, Austin Braden, Meridann Awalt, and Freddy Cervantes knew the Gilmores. "Based on just statements from our suspects," Cryer said. "They claim they were out in a wooded area shooting their firearms and looking for a place to rob and i think just because of the secluded area of this house is why it was targeted."
Said Eddie Gilmore, "I had some re-loads in this one gun and they mis-fired...next time they won't misfire."
Cryer says Humphrey, Braden and Awalt, but they are still looking for Cervantes. The suspects could be going before a judge as soon as Friday.
As for Eddie Gilmore, he won't be facing any charges.

Suspect with Box Cutter Knife Shot, Killed During Robbery Attempt

La VERGNE, Tenn. – Police have released the identity of the would-be robber who was shot and killed after barging into a store and attacking the owner with a box cutter.
The owner of the Discount Tobacco and Beer on Murfreesboro Road said he was robbed by a suspect who came into his store before 10:30 p.m. Monday.
The store had just closed. Police said the owner and another person were standing outside talking when 35-year-old Jamie Sellars walked up from behind the building.
Sellars was wearing a black hoodie and jeans. He started out by asking a question before lunging at him with the box cutter.
“He came out from behind (and) asked if they were open. They were not, so he attacked the owner with his box cutters,” said Kathy Tyson with the La Vergne Police Department.
The owner sustained a cut on his neck. Despite the injury, the store owner reached for his gun and shot the Sellars one time. Sellars was able to leave the store, but did not get far.
Officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department arrived a short time later. K-9 units were able to find the body of the suspect right next door.
Sellars was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead before being transported to the hospital.
Officials said the store owner did have a carrying permit for his gun.
The store owner was not expected to be charged. His identity was not been released.

Homeowner shoots out tires of theft suspects after they try to steal his ATV, dirt bikes

WEST SALEM, Ohio - A West Salem man was able to save his ATV and two dirt bikes by chasing two theft suspects and shooting out the tires on their pickup truck.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, two men stole the vehicles, along with a trailer, from a barn in the 10000 block of Flemming Road in West Salem at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.
As they were pulling away with the trailer attached to a Ford F-150, the homeowner, 46-year-old Bert Leasure took action.
He grabbed his 12 gauge shotgun, started chasing the truck and called 911.
"I said, 'I'm in pursuit of these guys that broke into my barn," Leasure said.
The suspects pulled into a yard on Ruff Road and tried to ditch the trailer, but Leasure said he caught up and fired three to five shots into a back tire and a front tire.
"I ended up catching them after miles. I was behind them and they were trying to lose me on every country road they could and then I got out there and they pulled in this lady's front yard and I ended up shooting two tires out with my shotgun," said Leasure. "I said, 'This is where it's going to stop', so I went pow, pow."
Deputies said the suspects—identified as 21-year-old Brandon Friedlein of Barberton and 23-year-old Justin Adler of Smithville—kept driving, but the truck became disabled near the intersection of Pine Street and East-West Salem Road in Creston.
Leasure, who continued to follow the truck, said a Creston Police officer happened to be in the area and arrested the two suspects.
"We obey the laws just like you or me, but you don't take people's stuff like that," Leasure said. "I'm just tired of it."
The Sheriff's Office said Friedlein and Adler have since been released and charges are pending.

'World's largest' sperm bank relocates near UCF

Good news… now you can pay for your Florida vacation by smacking off!

Cryos International, which calls itself the world’s largest international sperm bank, has relocated its U.S. main office and inventory from New York to Orlando.According to a news release, the company expects the move to Orlando will increase the amount of donors and international exposure -- due to the region's 60 million tourists and visitors each year, and the fact that University of Central Florida is among the largest universities in the nation.
Cryos is definitely targeting college students, a spokesman for the company, Jim Londeree, said. Its new location is near UCF and Central Florida Research Park.
“There’s a huge donor base here 18 to 29, because of the universities. Approved donors are screened for a variety of genetic diseases and can make up to $750 a month,” Londeree said.
According to Londeree, the company relocated to Florida for several reasons: High taxes in New York, weather, and “a huge amount of competition in New York for donors.” But the most important factor, Londeree said, was Orlando's growing reputation as a center of medical research.
The news release from Cryos says it is located IN the Central Florida Research Park, but it is actually outside the boundary of the research park itself.
The company called for new donors to begin signing up for screening online. Cryos says it is looking for donors over 5 feet 9 inches. It accepts donors up to age 39. Donors are also encouraged to allow a child to know the donor's identity, once the child turns 18 – called a non-anonymous donor.
Cryos has been profiled in national and international media, like Time Magazine and The Guardian, as one of the world’s largest sperm banks since 2000. The company also has a European headquarters in Denmark
