The man who wouldn’t go down; Dallas police say knife-wielding man was Tased repeatedly

Dallas police say a man causing trouble at a Red Bird grocery store pulled a knife on officers who tried to corral him and repeatedly pulled out stun gun prongs.
Police said a grocery store manager flagged down two Dallas officers Monday in the 1200 block of W. Camp Wisdom Road because Willie Watts, 47, was riding around a motorized shopping cart, threatening the manager and disrupting customers.
Willie Watts
The officers said they told Watts to stop, and he said no. They caught up with Watts and struggled to get him to stop. Police said when an officer turned off the scooter, Watts told the officer, “Don’t make me pull my piece out.”
Watts began walking down the aisle and pulled an unfolded pocketknife from his pocket and told the officers, “I’m not going nowhere,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
One officer pulled a Taser, and the other pulled a gun, police said. The officer used the Taser after yelling at Watts to drop his knife. Watts fell, but held on to the knife and tried to stand again. The officer buzzed Watts again. Watts still didn’t drop knife and tried again to stand.
The officer used a Taser again, finally causing Watts to drop his knife. The other officer switched from gun to Taser. But then Watts pulled out the prongs and stood up and lunged toward the officers, police said. They Tased him again. Watts pulled out the prongs again and ran through the store and out through the parking lot, police said.
Watts made it into a wooded area and began to crawl. The affidavit says officers zapped him again, but he kept on crawling. Another officer tried to use pepper spray to get compliance. Watts took off his shirt and pants and walked into an alleyway. He then jumped a fence into a yard in the 1200 block of Deerwood Drive. Another officer cornered him and used his Taser, finally taking Watts down and allowing officers to cuff him.
Watts had two warrants for public intoxication arrests in Dallas. He has also been arrested  for resisting arrest in Childress County in the Panhandle. His address is listed as DeSoto.
Watts is being charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest. He doesn’t have a bail amount listed in his jail log, but is in Dallas County custody.
The Dallas Police Department purchased 2,250 Taser stun guns — supposedly safer to use than the previous generation — last year, and has loosened the Taser policy to allow officers to use them in more situations. Previously, stun gun restrictions had been tighter and the department only had about 700 of them to go around the 3,500-officer department.

Heartless Monster Walks Out Of Local Small Business Without Buying Anything -The Onion

TOPEKA, KS—Expressing dismay at his shockingly coldblooded behavior, sources confirmed that local man and heartless monster Ethan McKenzie, 34, walked out of local small business Hearthstone Artisan Goods on Tuesday without purchasing anything. According to reports, the unrepentantly cruel individual was observed browsing the shop for nearly 20 minutes, yet was unable to find room within his shriveled, blackened heart to make even a token purchase at the independent, family-owned business. Though McKenzie picked up and examined several items during his twisted jaunt through the store, sources confirmed that the incredibly callous man returned each of them to its display, even possessing the unthinkable malice required to make eye contact with and smile at the store’s proprietor while carelessly re-shelving a handmade candle. At press time, sources confirmed that the misanthrope had strolled past the cash register toward the store’s exit without exhibiting so much as a trace of remorse, uttering a curt “thank you” over one shoulder in a final act of viciousness.

Self-Deprecating Man Just Scratching Surface Of How Pathetic He Actually Is -The Onion

MILL VALLEY, CA—Noting that there are dozens of awful aspects of his personality that he hasn’t even begun to address, sources confirmed Monday that local 28-year-old Ryan Glass’ constant self-deprecation only scratches the surface of how truly pathetic he is. “I should just apologize to people in advance when they try to get in touch with me; it always takes me forever to return texts or phone calls,” said the insufficiently self-effacing man who, in addition to glossing over the genuine irritation and alienation he causes his friends by ignoring their attempts to connect, regularly offers minor critiques of his physical appearance, professional skills, athletic ability, sexual performance, fashion sense, financial competence, and general demeanor that in no way capture the full extent of such attributes’ pitifulness. “I’m just a flake like that. I know I should respond right away, but being the space cadet I am, I always get distracted by something else and forget.” Sources added that Glass was only able to provide an accurately harsh appraisal of character flaws when describing the faults of his friends and coworkers.

By the Way, Bill and Hillary Have Banked More than $30 Million Since Last January

What’s the matter with you?…get on the stick!

She's running for president as a "topple the rich" champion of "everyday Americans," and he's just tryin' to pay the bills, y'all:

Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband made at least $30 million over the last 16 months, mainly from giving paid speeches to corporations, banks and other organizations, according to financial disclosure forms filed with federal elections officials on Friday. The sum, which makes Mrs. Clinton among the wealthiest of the 2016 presidential candidates, could create challenges for the former secretary of state as she tries to cast herself as a champion of everyday Americans in an era of income inequality. The $25 million in speaking fees since the beginning of last year continue a lucrative trend for the Clintons: They have now earned more than $125 million on the circuit since leaving the White House in 2001. In addition, the report shows, Mrs. Clinton reported income exceeding $5 million from her memoir of her time as secretary of state, “Hard Choices.” ...The report makes clear that Mrs. Clinton, since leaving the State Department, has joined the family speechmaking business with gusto. But the former president can still command higher fees than his wife, collecting about an average of about $250,000 per speech to $235,000 for Mrs. Clinton. And while Mr. Clinton’s largest honorarium was the $500,000 he collected from the EAT Stockholm Food Forum in Sweden, his wife’s engagements topped out at $350,000.

I would be remiss if I didn't highlight this little detail.  Nice work, if you can get it: "The former President was even paid $175,000 for a speech in Miami where he appeared via satellite."  Hillary also made six figures for addressing a gathering she didn't physically attend. Also, from the "dead broke" annals:

1,000 weapons found in Waco restaurant – including one in a bag of tortilla chips

As many as 1,000 weapons were found at the Waco restaurant where nine bikers were killed during a mass fight between rival motorcycle gangs, police said on Wednesday.
Investigators recovered items ranging from pocket knives to an AK-47 rifle, Waco police spokesman Sgt Patrick Swanton told the Guardian. Gang members rushed to get rid of their weapons, he said, as gunfire erupted and police moved in to the Twin Peaks restaurant in the south of the city last Sunday.
They were found “stuffed in toilets and hidden under seats,” he said. One firearm was discovered in a bag of tortilla chips, while a knife was located in a bag of flour. Brass knuckles, bats and chains were also unearthed.
Swanton said that the inside of Twin Peaks was a “pretty nasty scene” with “blood spatter everywhere”, especially in the bathroom.
Related: Waco shootout: how a friendly Sunday get-together ended in a biker bloodbath
The figure of 1,000 is a significant upgrade from previous police estimates of one or two hundred weapons. Police are unsure of the precise number of people who were at Twin Peaks for a scheduled meeting of gangs and clubs to discuss legislative issues, but in addition to the nine shooting deaths, 18 were injured and 170 arrested. It remains unclear how many were shot by police.
Attorneys for some of those booked into the county jail on $1m bonds have told reporters that their clients were innocent bystanders with no connection to criminal activity, but Swanton defended the mass arrests and said that the number of weapons demonstrated that the event was not planned as a harmless gathering.
Swanton also dismissed the suggestion that police might have been able to prevent the violence by stopping and searching those entering Twin Peaks.
“We have to abide by civil rights,” he said.
Anticipating a tense encounter based on intelligence which suggested rising hostilities between the Bandidos and Cossacks gangs, wa22 officers were in the vicinity of the restaurant before trouble erupted.
With fears of imminent reprisals from gang members receding but not ruled out, Swanton declined to say if Waco police are putting in special plans to patrol potential flash points such as bars and restaurants for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Dozens of investigators from multiple law enforcement agencies have been collecting evidence, analysing and securing the crime scene since Sunday, but police activity there was close to being wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon.
Several officers and vehicles and a line of yellow crime scene tape at the parking lot entrance remained, and the restaurant was still closed, but the lot was clear of cars, trucks and motorbikes and adjacent roads and stores in the shopping centre had reopened.

Americans Vastly Overestimate Size of Gay and Lesbian Population

This is how 2% or less of the population is able to bully the rest of the country.. It like the Biblical story of Gideon: make your force look stronger in numbers than it really is.

Same-sex marriage is one of the fastest-moving social issues in U.S. history, having become legal in state after state as Americans cheer it in ever-growing numbers. But one thing is slightly off-kilter: Americans seem to have absolutely no idea just how many of their fellow citizens are lesbians or gay men.
In fact, they think that 23 percent of Americans, or almost one in four, are are gays or lesbians, a Gallup survey released Thursdayrevealed. That's way off: The polling organization most recently found that less than 4 percent self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
A third of people surveyed believed that lesbians and gays made up more than 25 percent of the population. Just 9 percent of those in the survey correctly stated that they thought the group made up less than 5 percent of the population.
“Part of the explanation for the inaccurate estimates of the gay and lesbian population rests with Americans’ general unfamiliarity with numbers and demography.”
Gallup
It's unclear why people think there are six times as many lesbians and gays as there actually are.
"Part of the explanation for the inaccurate estimates of the gay and lesbian population rests with Americans' general unfamiliarity with numbers and demography," Gallup ventured, noting that people also overestimate the size of the African-American and Hispanic populations in the U.S., although usually only by a factor of two. "The overestimation [of the size of the gay and lesbian population] may also reflect prominent media portrayals of gay characters on television and in movies, even as far back as 2002, and perhaps the high visibility of activists who have pushed gay causes, particularly legalizing same-sex marriage."
Several gay, lesbian, bisexual, and even transgender characters have become prominent in recent years on TV shows such as “Modern Family,” “Scandal,” “Degrassi,” and “Glee,” as well as in movies including “Brokeback Mountain” and the Academy Award-winning biopic “The Imitation Game.”
Those who oppose same-sex marriage give slightly lower—but still way-too-high—estimates of the lesbian and gay population than those who support it do, but the difference between the two groups’ estimates was within the margin of error of 4 percent.
In a separate Gallup poll released Tuesday, the organization found a "record-high" 60 percent of Americans favoring the legalization of same-sex marriage.

The biggest ranch in America has gone on sale for $725 million

The biggest ranch in America has gone on sale for $725 million. At 510,527 acres, it is bigger than London and has hundreds of homes on its site.

W T Waggoner Estate Range is the largest continuous ranch in North America and spans six counties in northern Texas and has been under the same family ownership since 1849.

It has 20 cowboy camps, hundreds of quarter horses, thousands of cattle, 1,200 oil wells and 30,000 acres of cultivated land, the Associated Press reports, and has been dubbed “the Statue of Liberty” of cowboy culture.
Sotheby’s International Realty is handling the sale and Briggs Freeman at the company believes the ranch is the largest and most expensive estate in the world.
The Associated Press reports the ranch has been the subject of a legal dispute among the heirs of the estate for 12 years, and the family members eventually agreed to list the estate after the court housing the case said it was considering ordering the auction of the range’s assets.

Kidnap gang who demanded £30,000 from mother after threatening to cut off her son’s fingers jailed for a total of 63 years

Kidnapping is a brutal crime and a dangerous nuisance in many countries. It was largely eradicated as a common threat in America back in in the 1930’s due to the efforts of the FBI and strict enforcement of the “Lindbergh Law” that made kidnapping a federal crime punishable by death or life in prison. Will kidnapping make a resurgence in America because criminals no longer fear the forces of the law?

Why is North Korea executing high-level officials with anti-aircraft guns?

North Korea has reportedly executed a top official, Defense Minister Hyon Yong Chol, in a most North Korean manner: by shooting him to pieces with an anti-aircraft gun in front of a crowd of hundreds of other officials.
That's according to South Korea's intelligence service, which has a history of exaggerating reports about North Korea that make the country look bad. But there's reason to believe this could have actually happened — and that it could speak volumes about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's hold on power.

The Forgotten Realities of World War II by Victor Davis Hanson

May 8 marked the end of World War II in Europe 70 years ago -- a horrific conflict that is still fought over by historians.More than 60 million people perished -- some 50 million of them in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and China.
The prewar Soviet state in the 1920s and 1930s had killed perhaps 20 million of its own citizens in purges, exiles, collectivizations, forced famines and show trials. Then it lost an estimated 25 million soldiers and civilians to the German army on the Eastern Front. Hitler's Germany by late 1942 had occupied almost 1 million square miles of Soviet ground.
The Soviet Red Army would eventually be responsible for three quarters of Germany's WWII casualties, but at a cost of approximately 9 million dead of its own combatants. Nevertheless, the Allied defeat of the Axis powers is more complicated than just the monumental and heroic sacrifice of the Soviet soldier.
World War II started largely because the Soviet Union had had assured Hitler that the two powers could partner up to divide Poland. With his eastern rear thus secure, Hitler then would be free to fight a one-front war in the West against the European democracies.
The Soviet Union only entered the war after it was double-crossed by Hitler in June 1941. Before the surprise German invasion, the Soviets had supplied Germany with substantial fuel, food and metals to help it bomb Great Britain into submission. For all practical purposes, Russia had been Nazi Germany's most useful ally.
Duplicitous Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin at one time or another both fought against and followed non-aggression arrangements with every Axis power -- Germany, Italy and Japan. In contrast, the United States was the only major power of the war that did not start fighting until it was directly attacked.
The war in Europe was not just won with Soviet blood. When World War II started, America was isolationist and the Soviet Union collaborationist. After the fall of France in June 1940, Great Britain until June 1941 alone faced down the huge Nazi Empire that ranged from the Arctic Circle to the Sahara desert. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's steadfast leadership, Britain's superb air force and its indomitable Royal Navy ensured that even when outnumbered, isolated and bombed, England would be unconquerable.
Once the United States entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Axis cause was largely doomed. America mobilized 12 million soldiers -- about the same number as did the Soviet Union, despite having a population of about 40 million fewer citizens.
American war production proved astonishing. At the huge Willow Run plant in Michigan, the greatest generation turned out a B-24 heavy bomber every hour. A single shipyard could mass-produce an ocean-going Liberty merchant ship from scratch in a week.
In just four years, the United States would produce more airplanes than all of the major war powers combined. Germany, Japan, Italy and the Soviet Union could not build a successful four-engine heavy bomber. America, in contrast, produced 34,000 excellent B-17s, B-24s and B-29s.
By 1944, the new U.S. Navy had become the largest in the history of civilization at more than 6,000 ships. Its B-29 heavy bomber program and Manhattan Project efforts together cost more $50 billion in today's dollars.
America sent troops throughout the Pacific islands, and to North Africa, Italy and Western Europe. The United States staged two simultaneous bombing campaigns against Germany and Japan while conducting surface and submarine campaigns against all of the Axis powers.
At the same time, the U.S. supplied the Soviet Union with 400,000 heavy trucks, 2,000 locomotives, 11,000 railcars and billions of dollars worth of planes, tanks, food, clothing and strategic resources. By 1943-44, the U.S. also supplied about 20 percent of Britain's munitions.
If the measure of wartime success is defined by quickly defeating and humiliating enemies at the least cost in blood and treasure, then America waged a brilliant war.
Of the major powers, only America's homeland was not systematically bombed. It was never invaded. While its 400,000 fatalities were a terrible cost of victory, the United States lost the smallest percentage of its population of any major power.
By late 1944, the American M1 rifle, B-29 heavy bomber, P-51 Mustang fighter, Gato-class submarines, Essex-class aircraft carriers, and Iowa-class battleships were the best weapons of their class.
America did not win World War II alone. But without the United States, the war against Axis fascism would have been lost.

Newly Sworn-In North Korean Official Wondering How He’ll Eventually Be Executed -The Onion

PYONGYANG—In light of the recent execution of yet another high-ranking North Korean official, newly sworn-in legislator Park Jun-seo told reporters Wednesday that he is wondering which method will eventually be used to put him to death. “Being hanged is pretty standard, but there’s no real reason I won’t be killed by firing squad or decapitation,” said Park, adding he also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he was accused of treason and burned in public the same day. “They just shot the defense minister with an anti-aircraft gun, so they probably won’t go back to that well again right away. I guess they could just throw me off a balcony at one of the presidential palaces. That’d be as good as anything.” At press time, Park couldn’t believe something so obvious hadn’t occurred to him as his head was being positioned under the treads of a tank.

Winning: Dwindling Options In North Korea-Strategy Page

Winning: Dwindling Options In North Korea-Strategy Page

NK has much less military capability than it did 50 years ago, but it still can make a dangerous nuisance of itself. We can only hope and pray that the NK regime will gradually fade away peacefully and never ever decide to go for broke and attack south. Because no matter who wins a Second Korean War, it will be a bloody mess.

May 13, 2015: What military options does North Korea have? Not many, but North Korea remains a major threat to its southern neighbor and nearby Japan because of the few military options it does have. For nearly 70 years North Korea has called for unification of Korea, under their terms and by force if necessary. They tried it once in 1950 and failed catastrophically. During the Cold War they built and maintained armed forces that were considered a serious threat to South Korea, but the possibility of American intervention and the very public threat of the U.S. going nuclear held the North Koreans back. The American nuclear threat also caused China and Russia, who backed the 1950 invasion, to persuade the North Koreans to forget about another invasion unless their two big allies agreed to it.When the Cold War ended and Russian subsidies disappeared the country went into an economic depression that led to over a million North Koreans starving to death. While the troops were fed, they no longer received new equipment or sufficient money and supplies (especially fuel) to maintain the equipment or the combat capabilities of the troops. To make up for that North Korea put what little resources it had into developing better ballistic missiles and chemical weapons. Most importantly they developed nuclear weapons. These are crude, according to data from the few nuclear tests so far. There is one other new weapon the north has developed that might prove decisive and that is the growing North Korean Cyber War force. Developed slowly since the 1980s in the last few years the North Korean hackers have proved themselves to be quite competent and a growing number of effective hacking operations have been carried out (mostly in in South Korea and Japan). South Korea and American military planners are scrambling to get a more accurate idea of just how effective these North Korean Cyber Warriors would be in wartime. The combination of hacking, nukes, chemical weapons and surprise might enable North Korea to grab the South Korea capital (Seoul) and enough of South Korea to make a peace deal possible. It’s a long shot and once you look into the details you see that it is a more dangerous option of the North Korean leadership (who would be declared war criminals) and the North Korean people in general (because of possible nuclear retaliation).
Meanwhile the main, if no longer decisive, threat remains North Korean conventional forces. Some 70 percent of North Korean ground forces are within a hundred kilometers of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone, the border with the south.) This was long the main threat to South Korea but two decades of money, fuel and food shortages have greatly reduced North Korean Army capabilities. Two decades of extreme poverty have done even more damage to the navy and air force.
The Inmun Gun (the North Korean armed forces) looks scary on paper, in large part because nearly every adult male serves at least six years in the military. The big problem is that years of economic problems and failed harvests have left the troops poorly equipped, often hungry and increasingly insubordinate. With most of the best educated troops bribing their way into any job but one in a combat unit it is increasingly doubtful if the North Korean combat forces could get very far during an invasion of South Korea. Despite all that a lot of North Korean troops are believed to be reliable enough to carry out orders to invade South Korea, for a while at least, and that could end up doing a lot of damage to Seoul (the southern capital where half the population and a quarter of the GDP are). South Koreans have more to lose than the northerners if the invasion order is given.

The United States Has Become a Dictatorship of Double Standards

Yep its anarcho-tyranny: if our Leftist ruling elite supports you and your activities, you can do whatever you want; otherwise …”step out of line and the Man is coming to take you away!”

Even as I write this, I can feel the Overton Window shifting. Let the record show that when a death squad descended on Pamela Geller’s event in Texas with the aim of killing Geller for speaking freely, the “mainstream” response was to provide the death squad with golden parachutes of sophistry and moral equivalence. It was the finest of East Coast intellectual output.
I’ve lost count of how many sophistic articles have been published so far, but surely one of the most egregious came from Noah Feldman, JD, PhD, at Bloomberg View. In opening paragraphs so glib they seem to have oozed out of some used car salesman’s Brylcreemed pompadour, Feldman writes:
It’s easy to be distracted by the condemnation of the crime, which should be absolute. No verbal provocation can justify killing.
But it’s also easy to be distracted by the First Amendment.
Why do people write this kind of thing? What compels someone to consider a case of attempted terrorist murder, arising from the “provocation” of cartoons, and then devote all his forensic acumen to saying, essentially, “Hey! Look over there!”
wrote last week that the enemies of free speech are slowly nudging their target into the identity-politics framework. In this worldview, there are Oppressors and the Oppressed, and the roles are irreversible. It’s all narrative: the interlocking assumptions that determine how people interpret real-world events. The identity-politics framework sees American society (all of Western civilization, in fact) as a structure, a machine expertly tuned to produce benefits only for the Oppressor. Some people always win; some always lose. Thus Geller is the real aggressor, even when she’s being shot at. The death squad was merely reacting to overwhelming forces within the structure.
This is the basic logic behind most of our contemporary debate, such as it is, on everything from free speech to immigration to race riots to voter ID laws. There are hard and soft versions of it. Some people come right out and say that the Oppressed should use violence against their Oppressors. This group is often very theoretical, using the unwieldy concepts and jargon they learned in their cultural studies courses. You see them at places like (of course) Salon and The Nation and the post-Peretz New Republic.

Inside America's Next Spyplane

Of course we are 18 trillion dollars in debt and climbing, so one has to wonder if we will be able to afford such a cutting edge aircraft by  2030…or any air force at all for that matter.

Born in the spy-vs.-spy cauldron of the Cold War, the iconic SR-71 “Blackbird” remains the fastest air-breathing military aircraft the world has known. It flew so high and so fast that enemy defenses were powerless to intercept it. Eventually, satellite technology and advanced radar eroded its advantage. In 1998, the U.S. Air Force retired it. Now, with regional threats growing and portable surface-to-air missiles evolving, engineers have once again set out to build the fastest military jet on the planet.
This time, it will take the form of a 4,000-mile-per-hour reconnaissance drone with strike capability. Known as the SR-72, the aircraft will evade assault, take spy photos, and attack targets at speeds of up to Mach 6. That’s twice as fast as its predecessor.
Aeronautical engineers at Lockheed Martin and Aerojet Rocketdyne have been designing the SR-72 at their Skunk Works black site in California for the past several years. It will require a hybrid propulsion system: a conventional, off-the-shelf turbo jet that can take the plane from runway to Mach 3, and a hypersonic ramjet/scramjet that will push it the rest of the way. Its body will have to withstand the extreme heat of hypersonic flight, when air friction alone could melt steel. Its bombs will have to hit targets from possibly 80,000 feet. Lockheed says the craft could be deployed by 2030. Once it is, the plane’s ability to cover one mile per second means it could reach any location on any continent in an hour—not that you’ll see it coming.
"We are now on the verge of a hypersonic revolution."
—Brad Leland, Lockheed Martin's Hypersonic Program Manager

Please don't get drunk and chase bears, Massachusetts police urge

"The North Adams Police Department is urging everyone to not chase bears through the woods with a dull hatchet, drunk. Yes that really did happen tonight," police in the city of 13,500 people in a mountainous area near the Massachusetts-Vermont border requested on Facebook late on Monday.
The post, which was confirmed as authentic by a police dispatcher on Tuesday, came after officers responded to a call reporting a disturbance and found an inebriated man who had set out to drive bears away from his property, the dispatcher said.
The man was taken into protective custody due to his intoxication and later released without charges, the dispatcher said.
"We understand there are bears in the area," the police department urged. "If you see a bear, leave it alone."

One kidnapper at large, victim fatally shoots other suspect

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A kidnapper is on the loose after a dramatic crime on Pinewood Drive in Northeast Jackson Saturday morning. His partner in crime was shot and killed in what police are calling justifiable homicide.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart identified the deceased suspect as 23-year-old Edwin Robinson of Jackson.

Police said around 6:30 a.m., a man who lives nearby was leaving his house, putting some items in his vehicle, when he was approached by two armed men. They forced him back into his home to get his wallet, then they forced him into his own Toyota truck to drive to an ATM and get money. They all ended up on Pinewood Drive, where the offenders planned to leave the victim.

We were told one of the kidnappers threatened to go back to the victim's house to harm his wife, and that's when the victim grabbed his own gun from the truck, and shot and killed one of the kidnappers. His body was found lying in a patch of grass on Pinewood Drive.

The other kidnapper is still at large. Authorities describe him as a black male, wearing a bandanna and a dark colored shirt at the time.  He ran from the scene on foot, but is believed to be in a tan colored SUV with no tags.

Here's what one neighbor said about what she saw and heard.

"I heard about six gunshots at about 6:30 a.m. went to let one of my dogs out and heard some more gunshots. We saw people standing around, and a body and a truck," she says.
An overwhelming number of neighbors have told us that the victim is a doctor who lives nearby, and he is OK. Police have not confirmed that he is a doctor.
If you have any information this crime, or the whereabouts of the kidnapper at large, call Jackson

But new research is turning this well-known knowledge on its head with the discovery of the world’s first warm-blooded fish — the opah.
In a paper published today in Science, researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) describe the unique mechanism that enables the opah, a deepwater predatory fish, to keep its body warm. The secret lies in a specially designed set of blood vessels in the fish’s gills, which allows the fish to circle warm blood throughout its entire body.
Scientists already suspected the opah was special, says Heidi Dewar, a researcher at NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center and one of the paper’s authors. Most fish who live where the opah does — that is, hundreds of feet deep, in some of the ocean’s darkest and coldest places — are sluggish, thanks to the low temperatures. At these depths, even predatory fish tend to be slow-moving, waiting patiently for prey to come by rather than actively chasing it down. But the opah, which spends all its time in these deep places, has many features usually associated with a quick-moving, active predator, such as a large heart, lots of muscle and big eyes. These characteristics made the opah “a curiosity,” Dewar says.
The opah’s secret first started to come out when NOAA researcher and lead author Nicholas Wegner looked at a gill sample and noticed something intriguing.
All fish have two kinds of blood vessels in their gills: vessels carrying blood in from the body to pick up oxygen, and other vessels carrying oxygenated blood back out again. In the opah, the incoming blood is warm after circulating through the fish’s body. This is because the opah swims by quickly flapping its pectoral fins, rather than undulating its body like many other fish do, to propel itself through the water — a process that generates high heat. But outgoing blood, which has just been in contact with water in the gills, is cold. Wegner noticed that in the opah’s gills, the two sets of vessels are tightly bundled against each other, so that the incoming blood vessels can warm up the outgoing blood before it goes anywhere else. This set-up, known as “counter-current heat exchange,” allows warm blood to be delivered throughout the body.
Some other types of fish, such as tuna, have similarly designed blood vessels in certain parts of their bodies, allowing for “regional endothermy” — warm-bloodedness that’s limited to certain organs or muscles, such as the eyes, liver or swimming muscles. But the opah is the only fish scientists know of that has this design in its gills, where most fish lose the majority of their body heat to the surrounding cold water. By warming up the blood in the gills before it goes anywhere else, the opah achieves not just regional endothermy, but whole-body endothermy. Testing showed that the opah is able to maintain a body temperature about 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding water.
Being warm-blooded gives the opah a major competitive advantage. Even fish with regional endothermy usually can’t keep their heart warm. “If your heart’s cold, there’s only so much you can do,” Dewar says. “It doesn’t matter how much your muscles will perform, if your heart can’t deliver the oxygen and nutrients, your muscles can only do so much.” This means fish like tuna must constantly make trips back to the surface to warm up if they don’t want to slow down.
The opah, on the other hand, can spend all its time in the deep waters without losing its edge. And being warm-blooded in such cold temperatures means its eyesight and muscle performance is sharper than its sluggish, cold-blooded cousins. “The prey’s at a complete disadvantage,” Dewar says.
While only one species of opah is currently recognized — Lampris guttatus — scientists are starting to believe that they should actually divide the opah into several different species based on genetic variations in different populations around the world, according to Dewar. The opah in this study were found off the West Coast of North America, so the next step will be to start sampling opah in other parts of the world to see if they all have the same specialized gills, Dewar says.
Down the road, future studies could also examine other related types of fish to try and figure out how and when those special gills evolved. It’s possible that other deep-water species have similar adaptations.
For now, though, the opah enjoys the spotlight as the world’s first — and, so far, only — warm-blooded fish. “I think that it’s really exciting that we spend so much time studying especially these larger fish to find something that’s completely unique and has never been seen before in any fish,” Dewar says. “We’ve been very excited about it.”

Atomic wedgie death: Man kills stepfather with underwear

An atomic wedgie death is making headlines today after an Oklahoma man pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the death of his stepfather. Thirty-four-year-old Brad Lee Davis of McLoud, Okla. got into an altercation with 58-year-old Denver St. Clair on Dec. 21, 2013. The two men were drinking when St. Clair said insulting things about Davis's mother. That's when things turned violent.

According to a May 15, 2015 report from Sport Act Breaking News, St. Clair reportedly threw the first punch, and then Davis reciprocated, knocking his stepfather unconscious. While the man was still lying unconscious on the floor, Davis allegedly "grabbed St. Clair’s underwear and gave him an 'atomic wedgie.'" Death resulted when St. Clair's airway was cut off by the elastic band of his own underwear and he suffocated. The official cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation.
Davis phoned 911, but it was too late. His stepfather did not survive. Authorities claim the suspect sent an incriminating text message to a friend before the fight that led to the atomic wedgie death. Davis allegedly told the friend that he planned to hurt St. Clair, having "nothing to lose."
"His underwear was pulled up over his head and the elastic band was around his throat," Lt. Jimmy Brewer explained of the atomic wedgie death. However, Davis maintains that he never meant to kill his stepfather; he only wanted the older man to suffer embarrassment when he regained consciousness.
According to the Washington Post, prosecutors are seeking a 35-year prison term in the case of the man's unusual death.
For those who haven't heard of the atomic wedgie, the Urban Dictionary offers this definition. "When one is still in undewear [sic] and someone pulls up on the waistband and tries to pull it over the recivers [sic] head."

George Zimmerman Survives Apparent Assassination Attempt

It appears that George Zimmerman, who has survived the violent attack by Treyvon Martin, survived the media persecution, survived the trial, had his marriage destroyed and a reward posted on his head for the temerity of surviving, has apparently survived an assassination attempt.   A bullet narrowly missed George Zimmerman's head, leading to non-life threatening wounds.  The man who tried to kill him, seems to have thought he had succeeded.  From wesh.com:
Zimmerman's attorney Don West said a bullet missed Zimmerman's head, but he was sprayed with glass from his vehicle's windshield and other debris.

West said Zimmerman has been released from the hospital.

Kenneth Cornell says that the shooter approached him:
Kenneth Cornell told WESH 2’s Gail Paschall-Brown that he called 911 after the alleged shooter approached him and said, “I shot George Zimmerman.” Cornell said the alleged shooter then got on the phone with dispatch and explained what happened.
From the orlandosentinel.com:
Lake Mary Chief Steve Bracknell said Zimmerman did not shoot, but another person — an unidentified person Zimmerman knows — shot at him.

Police initially thought the shooting was a road-rage incident, but Bracknell said that might not be true.
The media are already trying to somehow blame George Zimmerman for the shooting.

George Zimmerman has to be one of the most reviled and maligned men in America.  His sin is that he defended his life at a time when the Obama administration was looking for an incident to inflame black voters.

For the best analysis of the Zimmerman trial, Massad Ayoob has done the best job.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Update: Conservativetreehouse is reporting that the shooter had stalked Zimmerman before.  They say he is  Matt Apperson:
Matt Apperson is the same guy who tried to gain fame in September of 2014 by claiming that George Zimmerman waved a gun at him during a road rage incident.  (Full backstory of their prior two encounters outlined HERE)

George Zimmerman shot at in Lake Mary

George Zimmerman, the former Neighborhood Watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in 2012, suffered facial injuries today after she was shot at by an unidentified man in Lake Mary, police confirmed. Zimmerman was released from a hospital in Sanford with some kind of facial wound, possibly from a bullet or flying glass. Video showed what appeared to be a bullet hole in the passenger side window of his Honda Ridgeline SUV. Zimmerman's vehicle was towed from the scene by a wrecker. The shooting took place at a trailhead near Lake Mary Boulevard and Rinehart Road. George Paschek, a resident in a neighborhood behind the shooting scene, said he was working on his lawn when he heard what sounded like two gunshots.
"I heard it and I said, 'Boy, that sounds like gunshots,'" Paschek said.
He added that he went back to his yard work, thinking he had mistaken the noise.
"When the helicopters flew over I started looking at the news," he added, before describing his reaction at hearing who was involved: "Zimmerman! Holy smokes!"
Lake Mary Chief Steve Bracknell said Zimmerman did not shoot, but another person — an unidentified person Zimmerman knows — shot at him. Police initially thought the shooting was a road-rage incident, but Bracknell said that might not be true. He said the other man involved is someone Zimmerman knows and has had contact with in the past. Bracknell said that man is cooperating with police. Zimmerman is with his lawyer and is not answering any questions, Bracknell said. Police said the shooting happened at the entrance to the park, which is at Lake Mary Boulevard and Rinehard Road. Zimmerman was accused of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the Feb. 26, 2012 shooting death of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford. A Seminole County jury aquitted him in July 2013. Then the U.S. Department of Justice investigated. But it said in February that Zimmerman will not face federal civil-rights charges, citing a lack of evidence. Since his trial, Zimmerman had several encounters with the police. Twice he's been arrested, accused by girlfriends of getting violent during breakups, and in 2013, his estranged wife accused him of threatening her and her father with a gun while they were moving out her belongings. He was arrested Jan. 9, accused by Lake Mary police of aggravated assault, but prosecutors backed away from filing criminal in the domestic-violence case because a woman, initially upset and angry, changed her story.

God Realizes He Forgot To Put Souls In Humans -The Onion

Doah!

THE HEAVENS—While pacing across His Eternal Kingdom on Friday, the Lord God Almighty, He Who Commanded Light to Shine out of Darkness, suddenly realized He had forgotten to provide human beings with souls, sources from on high reported. “I could have sworn I put souls in there, but apparently it never happened—I hope no one’s noticed,” said God, adding that it was probably too late to imbue mankind with an immortal spiritual essence now that billions of humans had already gone out the door. “I certainly meant to. Maybe I got sidetracked working on all the hands and feet and everything and just never came back to their souls. I created a whole bunch of other stuff that day, so who knows?” God later admitted He should have known He had forgotten something when, believing there was no more work to do, He was able to take the seventh day off entirely.

Police: Off-duty officer bit man's groin during fight

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Maryland police officer has been suspended after being accused of biting another man's testicles during a fight outside a bar while he was off-duty on Cinco de Mayo.Anne Arundel County police say 31-year-old Cpl. Michael Flaig was arrested Tuesday in Baltimore. Police in the city say the victim accused Flaig, who was off-duty, of groping his female roommate. Flaig is charged with second-degree assault and public intoxication.
Police told local news outlets that during the fight, the victim straddled Flaig to keep him from getting away and Flaig bit his testicles.
County police spokesman T.J. Smith says Flaig's police powers have been suspended and he has been placed on paid administrative duties. Flaig didn't have an attorney listed in online court records.
